Optimate Problems

I've used an optimate III for years with no issues. Now though, since moving house, it is taking 72 hours to charge the GS (new) battery. And the battery was kicking out 12.5v before starting to charge. Odd. May try another optimate III I have somewhere. Mine is wired directly to the battery.

This will only work for one initial charge providing you connect the charger before the socket has switched off (delayed by approximately 15 minutes after ignition is turned off). When the battery is fully charged the bike electronics will switch off the socket - and the trickle charge. The socket will only switch on again if a BMW charger (designed for this) is used. So long term your battery will discharge if you just leave a none BMW charger attached.

See the above point for limitations

Easy cure for that.....connect directly to battery.

The more immediately expensive but probably cost neutral over time for bikes that are stored for long periods is a LiFePo lithium battery. No need for a conditioning charger. Very little self discharge and no harm done by lack of use. They are also smaller, lighter and can't spill acid (dry cell technology).

Sent somehow.

Answered my own question. I tried the optimate I know was good at old house, and light went green within a few hours..
