I've tried using the Optimate to charge the battery on my F650GS through the auxiliary socket with no success. The system switches off after a minute or two.

I now intend to connect directly to the battery. I have removed the 4 torx screws on the top of the panel but the panel will not move. Are there any other screws which I have missed or do I need to use more force?

Yes! The surround cover around the ignition lock/aux socket unclips the rest of the screws are under there! 3 I think?? :)

If its the single 650 lift the seat and there is a stud there to connect it too! You should see it if you struggle I'll upload a photo..

Check the head stock, one either side, then when you lift the panel you have to unclip the supply wires to the socket. :thumb

Look down either side of the headstock you will find a screw going in there on either side. Once lifted just remove the plug from the rear of the DIN socket and you can remove centre section.

Handily the underneath of the centre section has a hole the other side from the aux socket. Drill an 18mm hole through the top and fit a bmw fused aux socket.
Do one terminal at a time and hold the main connection down with a screwdriver while un/doing the nut so not to lose connection and get service sign.
No more canbus compatibility worries.
