Morning.

I have read wonderful things about the Optimate4. I imagine it it just what I need for keeping my gel battery healthy (1991 R100gs). I also need to top up the one on an R1150RT. Question is: can it be connected directly to the terminals on the RT or is it better to use a jack plug via the accessories socket. BMW shop told me some years ago that I must not connect a normal charger directly to the battery as it will affect the peripheral electrics.

obliged

Easier to have the same plug on both bikes for ease of swapping over the charger. I used a ctek on both the 1100 and 100GS bikes that I have owned, both via the BM / Hella / DIN socket.

Also used ( lead on each bike connected directly to the battery ) Optimate for my R100GS and R1100GS. No problems. I think the problem starts when you use a 'full on' ordinary battery charger ( in that case one lead to positive and other lead to the earth strap )
