I've had the pranged gsa on the optimate for a couple of days, should it be charged by now, and could the battery be u.s. where it's been discharged for so long.
Hows it connected to the Optimate?
If its direct to battery it should be fine by now - if however you're using the "BMW" connection via the power socket...well it won't work as the power socket is ignition based and turns tself off after a few minutes once the ignition has been turned off.
That battery has been un-used for more than 6 months though so who knows.

Have you connected Opti' to the battery? or the accessory plug??

it's connected straight to the battery, i guess it could be knackered, it's an 06 bike but being discharged that long could be terminal i guess(ha)
I've just connected optlmate to my bike for the first time,via the socket, as per handbook, switch on ignition, connect charger, switch off ignition.do you guys think that will work, or shall I bin the plug and go straight to battery?

skt. connection only works with the proper bmw charger (unless you have additional skt. wired to the battery).
Optimates etc;
At last you have a BMW with a battery that is easy to get at - so just clip the charger terminals onto the battery - nothing could be simpler. (Assuming that you charger is low current - otherwise disconnect the connections from the terminals first.

If the battery is so completely discharged that the charger won't work, all is not lost. Your local bike shop may have a constant current charger which can output up to 48 volts or so, and may be able to desulphate the battery. If not you may still be able to recover the battery if you connect it in parallel with another working battery, and try to charge the batteries as a pair. Sometimes the setup allows the us battery to accept a small current, and the after a while it can be charged as per normal.

ok gypsy i'll give it a try, it's still on charge at the moment, it's been on for about 5 days and still says charging where it should be maintaining by know.

I had a battery that did that once. It was so badly discharged that the Optimate couldn't get any sense out of it and just sat there for days trying to charge it.
So I stuck said battery onto a normal car-type battery charger for a few hours. That got enough life into it that the Optimate could actually do something.

Connect it for an hour or two - but no more.
The only issue with using a car charger is that people leave the darned things connected and fry the battery.

Ok had first flat battery a couple of weeks back after bike not used for a week.
A bit miffed, bought optimate, recharged.
Thursay morning - bike not used since Tues. Battery flat. Jump started off car
Tuesday evening, battery flat. Jump started off friendly van
Wednesday morning bike starts hurrah!

as get false neutral at lights. Bike won;t start.Go home, get car, drive to bike, ride home, walk to car, drive home, faff about....
repeat ad infinitum.
Every time I've used my bike it either won't start or then won't start 40 minutes later when I've filled it up.
Very miffed. I'm pretty sure the problem is my stop-start journey 10 miles in a 30 (ish) limit with 50 sets of lights and the electrickery drain caused by the servo brakes. Still, my CB500 never fecked me about. Neither did my R850.
I daren't use the heated grips and the only extra leccy is the optimate charging leads.
Heavy duty battery on order. Carry jump leads everywhere. Jumped off a cabbie a couple of days back. (He started the meter running, tight old git....)
Fully charged last night on optimate. Started ok this morning....
Question: What riding to you have to do to get the alt. Charging the battery?

I'm assuming that you're not able to leave your battery on trickle charge overnight - otherwise you would do so and that would be the end of your problem. You may have a faulty battery.

Two simple checks if you have the apparatus Specific gravity with a hydrometer (which should show state of charge) and Voltage ( half an hour after 'full' charge) may give you the answer; your voltage should be over 13.
