Had my 1200gs about a month now, only 400 miles on the clock when I bought it and 11 months old. The salesman recommended I purchase an Optimate for the battery as he reckons they rundown quick if left idle for relatively short periods.
I've owned lots of Jap stuff and never had a problem with flat batteries. Any advice guys!

It`s not 'Jap stuff'.

Get an Optimate.




When you do get one,hard wire the Optimate leads to the GS battery to save fecking about with the accessory socket shutdown palarva.

Parked, my battery has been good for a month without any problems, and it has recently gone into its 5th year and its still cranking well.

If you want to save some coin, any automatic 12V/1A battery charger that cuts out at 14.4V (the majority of them) and has a float mode will work...what I've been using.

Yes you are right of course Tarka. It's not " Jap stuff ". It's exquisitely engineered oriental machinery.

Just to clarify that I wasn't referring to my gs as " Jap stuff " I was alluding to the fact that nearly all my previous bikes have been Japanese & haven't suffered from any battery issues.

As this is my first European bike, well that is apart from my Italian designed & built Yamaha Bulldog, I'm hoping that the GS can match the reliability & durability of Japans finest.

I know what you were saying mate...that`s why I posted that 'it`s not Jap stuff'.
By that,I was saying that you can`t compare Sushi with Sauerkraut.

I`ll say no more about the 1200,as that`s a completely different sow`s ear.
