Anyone know if I can plug my Optimate4 into the front 12v Aux socket.

Am I correct in thinking that this socket closes down a few minutes after switching off the ignition which might cause an issue?

The Optimate4 says that it's can-bus friendly but I don't want to chance knackering anything.

i bought this lead to do that from Nippy Norms ..you have to push the plug into the aux socket within a couple of mins of turning the bike off ,,then the pug gives around 10 mins of charge..waste of time..it was sent back after 9 emails to Nippys . then they finally accepted it…the BMW charger is the way to go if you want to use the aux socket for charging.

Id just use the optimate with the lead connected direct to the battery ,

Optimat 4 has two modes. one for regular charging, the other for canbus. In the latter it worked on my R1200R.

My Optimat 4 was left in the default (can-bus) mode, works a treat on my 1200GS (TC)

I just use the optimate with the fitted socket on the rh Side of bike lead connected direct to the battery.

You have to select the correct charging mode in the Optimate 4 (read the manual!) to charge through the canbus. It works fine but you need to ensure that you unplug any Sat Nav equipment that you may have connected to the canbus otherwise plugging the Optimate into the canbus will switch on your Sat Nav and drain the battery faster than the Optimate will charge it.

MB, I have my sat nav (Nav V) in the sat nav cradle all the time and charge using the Optimate 4. The Sat Nav does not turn on and/or drain the battery. Do you have a Nav V or another Sat nav that you've wired yourself?

The optimate 4 is a no-nonsense charging option. Plug it in to the aux socket on the dashboard and it does everything for you. Works like a charm. Change the mode to canbus (2 step instructions in the manual).

TomTom Rider v5. Set to automatically shut down when ignition is switched off, this is why it comes back on when the Optimate is plugged in as it assumes that the power from the charger is the ignition being switched on.

I too have a Tomtom Rider V5, I wired mine in to the existing pre fitted Nuvi Satnav cable, with the ignition switched off, when I plug my Optimate 4 into the Din socket the charger works as it should and the Sat nav also does not switch on, I also have a USB socket wired up to the satnav cable so I can plug my headcam in, this also stays switched off?? I have R1200GS LC 2014
