Ordered the kit , help !

I have ordered a 2610 from Maplin, a bracket from Motorrad Concepts and the mount and powercable from GPS something or other.
Now I am going to have to fit it to my 1200.
It's the wiring that worries me (a lot).
Should I fit another power socket near the clocks and put a plug on the end of the power cable ?
OR
just run the power cable to the battery ?(and put a fuse in, if I have understood previous threads correctly). I assume the Garmin power cable will be long enough to do this.
If there is anyone in the Bath area that could show me their set up I would be very grateful.

The 1200 has a dedicated GPS power socket.

I think if you buy the BMW branded version of the 2610, it comes with the correct power cable. I'm not sure what cable you've ordered from "GPS something or other" (GPS warehouse?) ... but maybe if it's specifically for the 1200 it will fit the existing power socket. However I couldn't find anywhere (even a BMW dealer) that could sell me a plug to fit into this socket.

Alternative solutions would be:

1 - Cut the existing socket off the bike's loom and fit some other style, for which you can obtain a plug.

2 - Bodge it by inserting solder tinned wires into the power socket and wrapping with a hefty amount of insulation tape

I did option 2 for my Streetpilot 3, and although I do intend to do something less shabby when I get the time and the parts, it has worked flawlessly for over a month now.

I live in Chepstow and work in Bath. However, I commute on my F650 GS. The 1200 comes out at weekends. Anyway, I've got the 2610 mounted on the MC bracket and am very happy with it, although it would be nice to lower the screen a bit further than second notch from top.

Regarding power supplies, I fitted a second aux. socket (BMW part) to the LH side of the beak. I'm not too happy with this, because I feel it is very susceptible to becoming wet in heavy prolonged downpours. My next plan of attack is to fit a TT dash panel (it comes with an aux. socket powered directly from the battery). This has been on order now coming up for four weeks. However I'm not using this for the 2610. I'm installing a Centech Aux. fused Bus and connecting this to the battery. The Garmin power lead will be connected to a 1 amp fused outlet on the Bus, with a 2 pole toggle switch installed in the pos. feed, which will be mounted on the dash. The Power cable and Autocom audio cable will run along the length of the bike loom under the tank. I plan on wiring the Autocom in much the same way.

My reasons for this are:-

1.) Because the unit is connected directly to the battery(via the fused Aux. Bus), when I switch the engine off, say to fill up, the 2610 stays on and does'nt have to be rebooted.

2.) When the 2610 has been removed there is no chance of the plug contacts shorting out in the event of it becoming wet, because it will be isolated via the toggle switch. The plug in this case will be in the Garmin bracket plug dock.

I plan on locating the Aux. Bus under the seat in the tool kit tray.

I hope this helps without causing too much confusion.

I don't see the point in fitting all this extra electrics and fuses, when the bike already has a dedicated power socket for a GPS that's protected by the fuseless system.

I too have the optional front power socket fitted to my bike, and I don't think rainwater is a worry at all. 12 volt electrics won't short out via rainwater ... you'd need a pretty strong electrolyte (eg salt) solution to get any appreciable current flowing, and then you would be more worried about corrosion from all that salt

By the way John P did we meet at Fowlers a few months back ? I was on a yellow 1200 and we talked about oil cooler covers.

Yes we did meet at Fowlers that time. I was on my black 650. Incidentally, I now have an oil cooler grille same as yours. A very nice bit of kit too!

Incidentally, once the dash arrives (you can never tell with TT these days) and I manage to get everything fitted, I'll post some pics of the installation.

I'll keep an eye open for you.

Can I ask where this is? I don't doubt you, it's more a matter of locating the blighter.

Is it another one of these BMW DIN-Power connectors (like the rear one) or some weird thing instead ?

It's just in front of the tank, on the left hand side. A large square socket connected via about an inch of wire to the main loom. It's not a "standard" power connector, it is, as you say, some weird thing

I am not sure what the third wire is for, but a simple bit of probing with a multimeter will tell you which ones are +ve and -ve.

Mine has insulating tape and a cable tie round it because I bodged the wiring rather than finding a plug to match ...

Am ordering all the same bits - but do not have a clue how to mount and install on my 1200GS.
i am absolutely useless when it comes down to wiring and mounting!

I leave in Chelmsford and would like to hear of someone who could help me with my set-up.

I was in the same boat as you guys a couple of months ago, but have since fitted my 2610 to my 1200GS. I felt so confused, there seemed to be so many different fitting and power options.

It's actually really not that difficult. Motorrad Concepts to mount it to the bike, and a Touratech TPS-15 to power it, along with my Autocom and any other gadgets I buy. Here is some advice I posted on a thread last month:

The TPS-15 isn't necessary, read the post by HMarc that's mention in the thread for a DIY solution.

I live in London, so if you really draw a blank, I can have a quick trip to Chelmsford to show you my set-up. Having said that, it's should be pretty easy after you have read the above thread.
