My other PC 'froze' just now - had to disconnect power to get anything moving - on attempting to restart it's trying to start up in windows 98 which it has NEVER had installed since new (preloaded with XP) - BUT WILL NOT RUN UP IN 98 DUE TO 'REGISTRY FAULTS'
wtf?
Any ideas anyone???
(can access 'set up menu' that's all)
Cheers

Do you have the CD for XP Steve???

If you do, go into 'setup', make the machine boot from the CD drive first, then run setup from the CD.

You will lose all your settings and sometimes a load of files, but unless you can boot into safe mode, there isn't much of an easy way around that.

But you make a backup every week anyway don't you, so you won't be too worried there will you  ;) ;)

Casually searching for the XP disc as we speak Bill, no doubt it will be carefully stored next to my last back up disc!

7% formatted on the new (raw) partition @ 58628 Mb Bill, so far so good but you'll have to think of something good pdq to keep the IT God awake just in case.
;)

EEk..........

well you'll definately have lost all the info now mate......

;)

If your machines are linked up, what i'd do is do a files and settings transfer from the other one to this newly reformatted and installed one....that way, they'll both have the same shortcuts etc for ease of use and as long as you and Rebecca share email adresses, they'll all be there too.

(only do the settings bit of the wizard though, unless you really want all the other crap across)

Just make sure it doesn't happen again

I'm 99% certain that what you had there was a boot sector virus - it crapped all over your boot sector so that when you rebooted it didn't have the XP loader and instead had whatever was in the virus payload.

Do what you did before and it could happen again. Make sure you have a competent and up to date anti-virus package and keep the virus patterns updated (ideally using auto-update)

Yep, sounds distinctly possible.......particularly with your late niight porno habits Steve

I'm using AVG, which is free for personal use and always gets very god reviews in the tests...it picks up on some things Norton doesn't so I'm happy with it, and it does update everyday.

Here's the download site for it.

Thanks so far guys, still loading.
Have Norton on auto plus firewall - what's the point if they don't do what they say on the tin?
Wouln't be so bad if it was porn - unfortunatly 'Automatic food metering & dispensing' was the search - how sad is that?
;) :beerjug:

Lost the lot!
Norton, Office Pro etc etc all been binned - even the so called recovery programs have themselves dissapeared.
Happened once too often for me I'm afraid, will keep the techie stuff for this site & not much else.
The rest of my life & business is going back to good old manual.
Expect to see a few IT bits in the 'for sale' section shortly.
Maybe BWM need to consider similar measures for the Gs?
Will keep one little console to keep up to date with you chaps though.
     (LARGE ONES)
Steve.
Thanks for trying anyway:beerjug:

Twas the format that did it squire

Appreciate that Shugie, but part way through the reload it offerred me no other option but to format - us non pc lot can only follow instructions on the screen - if the pc can do it better than me why doesn't it just get on with it?
:o :(
