Just took my 08 GS in to the dealer for a service and its first MOT (I didn't ride it at all last year due to work and the arrival of tiny little people in our house, so am late with the MOT) and they found an oil leak in the vicinity of the gearbox which is going to take approx £500 to resolve, and on the way there I noticed the fuel tank sensor had packed in, so that's another £200 before I have it back on the road..sob..sob..

Currently waiting for the phone to ring to find out the full whack, but it's going to be north of a grand. :censor:

Noticing other mentions of the fuel sensor, is this a common fault?

Probably an hour's work to solve.....take off tank, remove fuel pump/sensor plate, clean sensor potentiometer dial with carb cleaner and cotton buds, make sure armature is free and moving on its pivot, refit.

PS I see you're in Surrey....look up Steptoe here.....click the GS shop logo for his contact details, and take it to him.

He's in Roehampton.

Thanks Fanum, unfortunately this started yesterday & the dealer is already getting on with the work, wish I'd posted something earlier :blast

Still, always a next time, but by then the extended warranty that I've just taken out will have kicked in so it will hopefully cost me a lot less next time!

Kicking myself thoroughly up the arse for not extending the warranty last year..

Whats the exact cause of oil around the gearbox?.................would like to know what the failure mechanism is , just in case...

Don't know yet, they hadn't got that far when they called me. Getting worried as I haven't heard from them since yesterday morning which might suggest they're still working on it.. :(

Gearbox oil seal which may lead to oil on the clutch plates then it's a new clutch and FFS, do not take it to a dealer for this work:eek:

'Fortunately' not the gearbox, it's something to do with the balance shaft (does that have a seal somewhere?). Sorry for the vague picture of whats wrong, but I've been out of the country for a couple of days working and haven't had a chance to ring them. Hopefully will find out properly in the morning.

Ok, finally have my bike back. So, full service, MOT, replace shaft seal for balancing shaft, replace fuel-level sensor, loan bike, valet and ACF50. £890

I drank as much of their free coffee as my bladder could hold. May not sleep for a few days..

I'll be covered under the BMW warranty again from the end of April, so will not be reporting any further faults until after that :)
