I notice that Taunton Leisure are having a sale, and some of their tents are at considerable savings:

Linky :)

Mountain Equipment "Backcountry" for £99.99 instead of £199.99 :thumb2

Could be worth a look if you are getting geared up for the season ;)

Great spot, I bought a Coleman Quartz last year which is fantastic for just me but I'm going to buy a Refuge 3 for Euan and I so we can ditch the big tent.

My Refuge 3 turned up this morning. It looks like a good size tent but packs down to 50 x 20 and is nice and light, seems lke a good buy at 50% off.
Free postage as well.

North Face

Thanks for the tip-off Blackal. I see they're doing a North Face tadpole for £100 off too. It is half the weight which seems like it might be better for touring. Anyone any experience of these over and against the one Mountain Equipment?

Yes Blackal, thanks, and thanks for answering my earlier thread.

I'm after a 1 man tent which will pack up light & small. I await your words of wisdom (if you can help) on a specific tent to match my needs.

Thanks.

I always wonder about the sense of buying a one man tent. I bought a Quartz 3 after seeing Forrys Quartz 2. The Quartz 3 has just enough room for me and my kit with a porch for my panniers and boots, it (like this Refuge 3) packs really small and is very light. Why for the sake of a few kilos use a tiny 1 man tent with no room for kit?

The North Face Tadpole is a good tent also, but with the real lightweight tents you have to buy an additional groundsheet unless you camp only on pure grass with no stones in it. The lightweight groundsheets are very prone to damage.

The Coleman range are good, though - I think I bought one of the £50 ones last year due the thread that Trippy mentioned.

Starting out - I wouldn't spend too much, so the Mountain Equipment one at Taunton seems particularly good value.

I'm new to this camping lark, I assumed a 1 man would be easier to transport.
I bow to you superior knowledge Trippy & will open my mind towards a 2/3 man tent.

If you buy a Coleman Quartz 3 (now known as Phad) or one of the Mountain Equipment Refuge 3's at 1/2 price you will have enough room for you and your kit + one other if you don't mind being cosy. Unless your going to carry it on your back 1 man tents are IMO a waste of time and you will always regret not having the extra space.

I've got a nice little coleman cobra, 2 man (if friendly) but just perfect for 1 man and bike kit, they go on ebay fairly cheap too
