Hey folks

Am running a wired connection through a live box to a vista PC. Outlook will open and let me receive emails (slowly) but IE8 just says cannot display page and firefox comes up with a blank page.

I spent half and hour on the phone to an Orange helpline followed by a further hour when the "supervisor" called me back. During this time it was established that IE was connected and various checks of dns were done including a ping test (25% failure, one out of four).

I am thinking its maybe spyware or something? Any suggestions ?

Orange have ordered a line check but it will be saturday before I get the results.....

I wouldnt have thought it was spy wear that wouldnt normally effect ping

can you see what your computer is doing? does it seem to have a high CPU load?

have you updated anything recently?

do you have a virus checker installed?
- is it up to date?

what happened/changed since lunch time?

Not sure about the CPU load. Is that discernable from "task manager"?

Apart from the usual plethora of windows and firefox updates the only thing I added was a driver to enable me to use my Canon MP600 as a scanner, there was some sort of Vista incompatibility with the original scanner software.

What happened was I turned the PC off and left it for a few hours then switched it back on!

I use the free AVG software and it was upto date until yesterday..................

You have almost the same setup and symptoms as me. I run IE7 under Vista with AVG free to hopefully keep the gremlins at bay. Every so often IE acts like the Internet connection has failed although Windows Mail still sends and receives. I only use IE7 so I don't know if another browser would show the same problem. I also have the support software for a Canan camera. Who knows what obscure incompatibilities there are in that lot (I run ZoneAlarm as well). Ever since installing support for a Fuji camera fouled up a Sun Microsystems Java compiler 9 years ago I've stuck to Microsoft where possible in the hope that their different divisions talk to each other.

crap. I'm having the same kinda problems. It was solved initially by removing the zone alarm tool bar from firefox (even tho it wasn't being used), but the symptoms are back again.

A mate has the same problem & ditched zone alarm as a firewall and just uses the windows one & he's back to normal.......................but you're not

back to the drawing board

yes cpu load can be seen as a function of task manager.

did you ad all te patches just before the problem started o have they been added over a period of time?

can you turn off the av software for testing? I know browsing doesnt work on this laptop until IE and AV are "sync'd".. at least you can then identify where the problem is.
