Can someone please help? My Outlook has suddenly started playing up badly. I run Win98, and Office/Outlook 2000 and normally have no problems. I am fully up to date virus protected. (AVG)

I find I cannot delete emails from my inbox, or move any to my personal folders. In both cases I get the rather unhelpful pop up box saying:

“The file C:\Windows\local settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Mailbox.pst could not be accessed”

mailbox.pst is still there, in the location as indicated above, so I don’t understand what’s happened.

I’m also having trouble retrieving my email at the moment, but the connection does seem slow this afternoon, so perhaps that’s not connected.

Any help/guidance would be MUCH appreciated.

Mike...as you're a Thunderbird user, maybe you could solve the only question I have about it that stops me from switching to it permanently???

How the fekk do you make it open up in 'inbox' view???

I've tried the obvious, but that doesn't work- any ideas???

Hmmmm......

Mine is chrome://messenger/locale/start.html and it always opens up my inbox.

I have my thunderbird set to retrieve mail, usenet news and News&Blogs. It always launces in my inbox.

Just tried that too and it didn't work...I've tried several times by putting the address for the inbox as it actually is on my HD in the options, and various other combinations, but no difference.

A shame, 'cos otherwise I'd use it.

It's the best thing on the web, and what internet communication is all about!!

One minute I have a seemingly insurmountable problem with MS Outlook, then one query posted here and all is solved.

In this case 'themadprofessor's' link lead me to the solution, which was repeated use of Scandisk and Scanpst which eventually solved the problem, and returned my MS Outlook to working condition.

Thanks to all that answered.

On the subject of Thunderbird mail programme, as suggested by Cheesy Mike. I have tried it, but struggled to make it work smoothly. I do use Firefox, and find that is pretty brilliant.

Direct quote from the help page on the web "If you want Thunderbird to open directly in your Inbox when you launch the application, go to "Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings" and check the box that says "Check for new messages at startup." "

The setting option you are looking at in there is for what shows if you don't have the "check at startup" option selected.
