It is hard to get hold of but Rock Oil still do a 'standard' semi synth 20w50 of the right grade 'Strata' - their old 'Guardian' has now been repackaged (and repriced) as a premium motorcycle oil (apparently after it became popular on this forum... )

Rock Oil is good, but remember you don't need "motorcycle grade oil" (i.e. JASO MA or MA2 for wet clutches) for the dry clutch boxer engines. WC owners of course have wet clutches (and lots more besides). Car oil is arguably better for the boxer engine, as anti-scuff, low friction additives can be used.

Which will make it interesting a few years from now seeing how durable very high mileage LC's prove to be. Wet clutch, retrograde step in my opinion.

Hey look! We're doing one of those "oil threads" that everybody loves :D

:D :D

I use Fuch's 'Silko;ene' 20-50 semi synth in both Yam (wet clutch) and 1100GS, API sf-sg, no probs on either bike. My local mechanic stocks it.

Gonna try some 10-50 in the Yam next year. Yam club recommend Morris 'Ring Free' 20-50, apparently it's a diesel engine oil with lots of detergent in it, not sure of the grade though.

Wouldn't recommend that with a wet clutch. You need something rated JASO MA or MA2. Worst case, clutch will slip and you will need to replace it :blast Should be fine in the BMW though :thumby:

Yeah, I know it might be a bit slippy, but I'm thinking of a Barnett clutch anyway. Try the 10-50 on the original first though, if it aint good, go back to 20-50 with the Barnett.

I've always used 20-50 or treacle, the bikes really quiet on treacle, but a bit sluggish.

Comma, Morris, valvoline and many others still do 20-50. Has anyone ever tried Duckhams? :hide

Duckhams used to be (c. 1970s - 1980s) excellent oil, then it was overtaken by technology. Latterly (mid-2000's I think) it was bought by Castrol and became brown not green and was sold as bargain-basement oil in Wilcos & Boyes, alongside the recycled stuff. Discontinued in 2009 - I don't think you'll find any now.

Here's a baker's dozen of alternatives :) LINKY
