overheating touratech pannier!

Anybody else had this problem?
Bought a set of touratech panniers second hand for my 1150 ADV the ones with the cutout for a remus can,after a trip to the elefant rally I noticed that one of my inner bags (waitrose cool bags) had a scorch mark on it, thought that I might have left it too close to the fire but ordered a heat shield from Touratech anyway,
This of course didnt fit and today found that after a 150 miles trip my Zumo soft case has melted against the inside of the pannier
any help gratefully recieved

Did tou get a short extension pipe that goes into the end of the can to deflect exhaust gases?.

no they sent me a half round piece of stainless steel for £45! which would not fit bacause the end of the can is only an inch from the cut out on the pannier

I think I would be looking for some automotive heat shield, even some alloy plate, spaced off the pannier a little ought to work, my left pannier only gets warm but I have the 35/41 litre type, how close is the skin of the pannier to the exhaust?

Get some sticky heat reflective tape from Halfrauds

the main body of the can is almost touching the pannier and the end blows straight onto the cutout of the pannier

No, it isn't meant to happen, which is why you get a short "stubby" exhaust extension which bolts onto your frame and take the bulk of the heat away from the panniers. I know somebody who didn't bother fitting the extension and melted one of the pucks that holds the pannier to the frame.

Before anyone says anything, it wasn't me.

Are you certain that the Zegas you have bought are the correct ones for use with a Remus end-can?

TT used to sell two distinct 'Special Set' n/s panniers depending on whether you have the OE can or Remus etc.

The OE silencer pannier cut-out is curved with a tube that just rests in the end of the can to re-direct the gases and the Remus one is square/rectangular with a rectangular extension.

The difference is because the Remus has a wider outlet that causes the hot gases to hit the end of the cut-out with the symptoms that you describe.

Their website doesn't seem to list a Special Set for use with after market silencers anymore.

If you don't have any joy with TT (and if my previous experience is anything to go by you won't ), any sheet metal fabricator should be able to knock up something which would do the job (might not be pretty, but it'll be hidden behind the pannier).

Or, get creative with some aircraft snips, a sheet of 16swg aluminium and a pop riveter ...

I thought the exhaust extension was part of the package - along with the pannier frames etc. So if you didn't get it at the start, then there are parts missing and they should send them on.

Dunno about the 1150 but the kit I bought for my 850 (same as 1100) came with a short exhaust extension to take the hot gases past the end of the inside of the pannier. At the time (3 or 4 years ago) there was a different extension for Remus exhaust. Unfortunately my extension pipe came off (it's somewhere up the M1 Northbound if anyone is interested). This caused one of the pannier mounts to melt a bit, so I had to buy a replacement. It took me ages to get a replacement extension pipe from T/T as it was not listed as a separate part. It eventually came and I've had no further problems.

It'll probably be quicker to fabricate something; if you're going any distance you'll need something.

but as you say it might be quicker to get something knocked up

The larger B&Q stores sell small sheets of aluminium (outrageous price, but they're convenient) or you scavenge / beg some (you'll only need a small offcut - try local signmakers). Buy / borrow some snips and pop-rivetter (screwfix are cheap for these).

Make a cardboard version of what you want, transfer it to aluminium (don't forget overlaps for joining etc), rivet it together and bask in the warm glow of having made yourself a custom adventure biking accessory
