Overheating

The bike got up to the bottom of the red mark today whilst leaving the Excel in London, christ what traffic!!
Now as its air cooled thats only to be expected crawling along 2 up in heavy traffic but whats got me is the smell of what i believe was the trans/gear oil.
Is it normal for it to smell so much your mate starts checking his Pan in front of you for leaks
Got a 3k trip around France/Spain in May and as I am hoping the ambiant temp will be higher so the problem may reoccur as it wasnt hot today.
Or can i stop worrying and just put it down to the engine temp?
Engine oil is 20w 50 Guardian Rock oil.
Gear oil is 75w 90

Are you sure you could not smell the clutch which can smell in traffic if you have been slipping it

Got mine up to 7 bars in central London before, the engine noise was awful. Only solution is to pull over, not good for a modern bike.

See what others have to say, at least you've got the "better" grade of oil than the std. 10/40.

Could have been as it was geting a lot of use..............a very lot of use as it happens, but unless it smells like gear oil or similar, ah well it soon cooled off.

Same here

The same thing happened to myself on the 1200 going to excell through the centre of London. The temp guage was the highest I have ever seen it and the oil lamp was flickering at tickover. Its only a 1000 from service so the oil was still good and at the correct level. Saying that, my mate on his 1150 said that he could smell hot oil coming up from his bike. We both remarked at what it would be like in the middle of summer or in the desert.
Or is it some device the goverment and Red Ken fitted to the streets of London to put off noisy motorcyclists with their Remus cans.
Still managed to melt more of the rear number plate on the way back.

Note to self:- Drive over and around cars crawling in heavy traffic.
By the way was it just me or was the Excel show disappointing. Thats a whole new thread right there!!
Better bikes in the car park including one GS with a nice GSER.COM sticker I noticed while being nosey.

Regularly run the 1150 at high Ambients up to say 38C and at a mile above sea level, the only time I have had issues is in river beds, the motor "Working Hard" in deep sand at low speed, which I assume is the real issue. The biggest Kak was what I think was the throttle bodies sticking, I got a 2500 RPM tickover till it cooled off, not fun, only happened twice but under the same conditions twice?

Same place same day but not da pig.
