I don't think there's anything spcial about painting them. There was the bollox about he paint needing to let the tank breath:augiebut that's al I've ever heard about it

never heard that one before.. it used to be thought that the plastic itself was slightly gas permeable and thats what caused the bubbling. A lot were repainted in the states in particular before BMW offered the free swap for the metal tank. I don't remember there being anything particularly special or complicated.. just a bit of work to get rid of the gloss to form a good 'key' for the primer. And a lot of angst over what colour.. of course.

Might be worth PMing sycomoto - there's a thread in the airhead section where he's repainted the hpn tank on Camilla.

The paint on my 1100's plastic tank developed a few bubbles last year on the inner radii of the knee scallops, so the original paint doesn't stick as well as it might but paint technology has moved on in the intervening 15 years :)

I've had my 41 litre Touratech "plastic" tank painted by a friend 2 years ago and it is still perfect.

My friend was advised to treat it the same as the plastic used on car bumpers etc and use the appropriate primer for that. If you like I can ask him for the exact spec of the primer used. The top coat was standard BMW Alpine white.

Thanks for the replies chaps, the original paint is still there apart from a few dings and scrapes so I will begin by flatting the whole thing off and seeing to any deeper chips, I have some plastic primer for any bare bits then I think I will go for an overall coat of conventional primer and top coat :thumb2

Paint Job

Hi Stewart painting is my game, and what i can tell you is that when you paint plastics you must use a plaspack primer. This is put on first followed by a hi build primer, then after rubbing down your top coat. If you dont use it, some were down the line it will more than likely start to peel off, hope this helps.:thumb
