Has anyone else with a magnesium 800GS noticed their paint coming off?

Mine is 7k miles, under a year old, garaged, not dropped, and cleaned but not polished. (Seems little point polishing a matt bike!).

Whilst washing it today I noticed paint gone- if I didn't know better I'd say it looks worn off.
It's missing from the rear right panel near the fuel filler (not a place to wear off given that my total pillion carrying has been about 60 miles worth). The other place is on the left front panel, but not where my leg lives.

polish isnt just for shiney paint,?
that does look worn off rather than anything else though,
it doesnt look very thick either

Yes, 09 gray model. The paint is wearing off where my knees rub. Im 6'2" and noticed this after a few months. The panels are painted over a very light gray plastic. It will be difficult to match as the texture is rough. Due to a bit of a tumble I now have the whole left panel to paint, Deaewoo stone silver seems a fairly close colour match.
I don't think BMW will show much interest, you have been using it and you have been wearing rough biker trousers with the texture of sand paper. Its similar to the knee wear you used to get on painted petrol tanks. Im old school and all proper bikes came with rubber knee pads. All you get these days is a tank pad to keep your beer belly in place.

If it is "wear & tear" then I'm stumped as to why the rear panel is suffering! Nothing wears or tears there! And in 7k miles?!
I sold my last bike with >20k miles on and the paint was sound. But that was a Honda- perhaps they expect their bikes to last? More than 9 months anyway!

I suppose if BMW snub me, I'll just have to swallow it. And shop elsewhere- my 12th bike may have been a BM, but my 13th won't!

Forget the Deaewoo stone silver, It looks OK on the can but its too light.
I have tried three silver, gray colours which look close but on the panel are miles away in texture and shade. Im off to a panel sprayer tomorrow to see if they can match it.
I have costed a new colour matched panel from Motoworks, without badges, fittings and air pipe its £227, not as bad as I thought but still expensive.

Same wear patterns on Madames yellow 800. No pillions there.

The rear is where you push or handle the bike or lift it on to the centre stand or maybe as you brushthe bodywork getting on or off.

Is it really enough of a problem to abandon the marque? I think you'll find all modern (water based) paints wear quickly, irrespective of manufacturer.

I'm sorry, but the pics look like 'wear and tear' to me. As Badger says, modern paints are thinner. But there's no getting away from the fact that your paint has rubbed off. Your pillion might have only been there for a short time, but I doubt they were relaxed! Have you got a brown stain on the saddle?

Is it mean't to be a museum piece? :augie

it's not a proper 800 unless it looks like this...

those rear panels will have wear (in the case of the grey's) or scratches in the case of the yellows from just getting on and off. That's why Touratech make those rubber covers specifically for that area.

BMW will laugh in your face. They don't give toss about wear and tear.

Just ride it :thumb

I'm going for Klanky's advice!! :)

I'm annoyed about the rear panel on principle as it's on the right- I stand on the left! I've taken x3 Hondas beyond 25k miles with such problems. I wonder what mine will look like then!

But the evil pixie in my head says get a custom respray when mine looks shite :D

mine has 35,000 on it and Micky is up to 39,000 and will be tipping 40K as we speak as he's on tour in Germany. They get a few scratches and the paint wears off the frame but its no big deal. The black parts can be touched up with plasticote satin and the panels are so small you can easily get a custom job like you say. Gunz went for purple and a few others on adv rider went for matt black. :thumb2

Those are wear from the rider and passenger's legs. I have the same thing.
put a sticker on it.

Ok, I own a BumbleBee, But I have noticed that the paint is too thin, i mean spotty on the rear yellow panel, vertical side above the exhaust/ and opposite side. Go hell for leather for warranty replacement, I think that I will.
