My brother recently took the rear shovel off his GSA to find the Final Drive case is a mess with corrosion under the paint.

My FD is being rebuilt and powder coated while it's stripped. Bro's is mechanically good so won't be taken apart but it's cosmetically crap.

It's too far gone for a patch up job. Needs a full strip etch prime and paint.

Can anyone recommend a paint stripper product to clean off the silver paint back to bare metal without eating into the alloy parts?

Always just used nitromors and never had an issue. It never even used to mark the alloy on the old engine cases when I removed the lacquer and autosoled them. This case will need some sanding to get rid of the corrosion obviously.

I'll see if I can get some "proper" stuff. The last "paint & varnish" stripper I bought was a dead loss.

The issue is the great toughness of the BMW paint. I had to have my alloy wheels professionally dipped by the company that does car bodies for restoration. They were VERY good but obviously less than ideal for fully assembled gearbox.

Nitromors have changed their formulas due to environmental demands, see if you can find an old tin that someone has lying around.
