Painted Rear Luggage Rack

Gave it a quick clean, but probably shouldn't have bothered as it rained before I finished it. :blast

Being a newbie to BMW's and in particular GS's, how long does it take to remove the rear luggage rack and how easy is it, as I am considering going satin black on my Rallye?
All the painted examples looking good :okay

It's very straightforward, just unbolt the bars and fixing bolts. Off it comes.

The tricky part is removing the hardware parts (if you want to).

My tips are:-

Take lots of photo's so you know how each part is rebuilt.

The 6 rubber pads, refit using WD40 lubricant.

The lock is removed by inserting key, rotate it 90 degrees, push small barrel locking plate into lock barrel and pull key and lock out of the mount. It's easy.

I bought a second hand luggage rack for £38 delivered off ebay, so I could carry on using my bike while it was being painted. Also handy as a template when rebuilding my own, and as spare parts should you need it

Yes, the steering damper is now a DS-068B-NL1 - Hyperpro Damper CSC (Constant Safety Control) 68mm - Solid Black

Pillion pegs are removed

ESA has been removed and replaced with Ohlins TTX Shocks with ESA eliminator plugs

Exhaust system (Headers and backbox) have been removed (including flapper valve, servo motors and catalyst) and replaced with Akrapovic Titanium full system with Servo Buddy eliminator plugs.

Seats have been removed, and replaced with Wunderlich heated ergo seat.

Spoked wheels have been removed, and replaced with GS Alloy Wheels, which are much easier to manage for road use.

So I've tried to get rid of all the little weak/reliability issues and replace them with good stuff that'll keep me going for a while.

He only asked about the steering damper, you big tart! :P

That painted rear rack looks good though; I did mine in 2014! :D

Needed something lighter, due to a car accident and a fucked back.

Fair enough, that's a shame. I do wonder how long I'll last as nearly all my mates (around my age) all have bad backs as well. That's why none of them ride off-road with me. :(

Oh well, I'll just keep going for as long as I can.

Do you think you would be able to get durable finish using spray cans?

Shame bmw don’t make the part In black to buy.

In my opinion, no.

The reason I went to a pro painter is because it cost me £100 cash, they prep it, paint it, bake it to harden the surface, and it's got a warranty.

How much would you spend on rattle cans? £30... and then not get a hardened finish, paint drips, imperfections....

To then have to strip it all back and get it done again properly.
