Lucky me got a pair of Touratech fog lights, for my 1200GS (06)
do I need to use both fuses / relay and switches if I only need them to come on together.
Any one fitted these and know any short cuts -

Thank to any one who can help

cheers Jeff

Depends on a few things.

1. Only need one switch.

2. The relay is probably ok just just need to check the rating. e.g. lights probably 55w so (55*2)/12 = 9.1amp. so as long as relay is rated higher than this then ok (most are).

3. Fuse - matter of choice - can get away with one fuse but if it blows then both lights will be out. If you use one fuse then it obviously needs to be 2* the rating of the ones supplied.

Are they both foglights or a fog to come on with dip and a spot to come on with hi-beam?

Jeff...........er any chance of an idiots guide to how you wire them in. I'm thinking of buying a pair of Touratech spots to come on with dip beam and I'm getting different messages about the wiring (or most probably me being thick).

BMW shop says they can supply some sort of connector which plums in somewhere under the headlight (yes I am vague about it).

Could you very kindly elaborate how/where the wiring/fuse/relay/switch etc goes.

Get that fuse as near the battery as possible....

Here's what I did:
1) run a wire each from the Pos & Neg of the battery . Route it around the left side and under tank. Have an decent inline fuse AS CLOSE TO THE BATTERY as possible with a 15A in it. Makes it safest and easy to change/remove as it's under the seat.

2) You'll need to switch them on. My preferred way is to tap into the wire right at the headlight. You should double check, but the Brown is dipped and yellow is full head light. Again, some good photos on some posts if you do a search. Doing it this way means the aux lights only come in when the main light is on (and you can turn them all off with the indiactor/cancel switch trick).

3) Run them all (including the cables from the actual lights) to a Relay. 30A or 40A seem to be standard from halfords etc. I put the relay just if front of the fuel pump/tank as there's plenty of space here on the Adventure.

4) get some decent crimp on connectors (soldering always seems to crack after a while).
Relay(Halfords/Maplin):
85: from Headlight
86: From Negative Battery
30: Positive from Battery
87: Connect to + on both lights

You'll need to split the Neutral from the battery as it has 3 places to go..i.e Neg on each Aux light and also the 86 connection on the relay.

**
Be careful with the Positive and negative going to the Aux lights. The negative will be grounded to the frame so you'll blow fuses like crazy if you mix these wires up.

Foglights

Would remind you that it is illegal to use foglights except in conditions of fog or falling snow when visbility is less than 200 metres.(I think)
Just an aside, because I live on the edge of a redneck reservation, & people from there always drive at nights with their foglights on, blinding all & sundry.
(Revenge is mine - sayeth Myke - 4 Hella DE driving lights + 3 HID headlight beams usually force the miscreant into submission. I know it's wrong of me, but it is wrong of them too!)

'Twould be the most anally retentive copper that pulled you for it. I fitted twin fogs as per the OP a few years ago, rode all over UK with fog lights on in day and night time (to be seen easier) and never been pulled or had dramas at MOT testing time.

Legality + MOT

Nothing to do with MOT.

Just courtesy to other road users.

Padge - thanks for that.
If you weren't in Dublin I'd offer you a nice retainer to do it for me !
