Just bought some gear oil from Halford. Specs should be OK:

EP 80W-90
AP GL-5
Hypoid light

But then realised it's DIFFERENTIAL gear oil. Didn't think too much about it at Halford but I noticed it was much thiner than the old one.

And now the panic is taking over...

Is it all right...????

Carbold,

someone is probably going to answer and tell you exactly how harmful or otherwose this will be for a GS. Just go back and exchange it. Halfords seem OK about that kind of thing.

Its OK mate, as long as its GL 5 spec, the EP means Extreme Pressure for gear teeth, better still is semi synth castrol Syntrax or even better Mobil 1 fully sythentic gear oil Mobilube SAE 75W-90 so if you haven't opened it go change it, only use the fully synth stuff if your bike has done 12,000 or more it makes the gearshift much smoother and with Mobil 1 in it just will not wear.

can't exchange

The point is that I've already used it ...

Carbold,

Your profile says mech engineer (pHd) shouldn't you be telling us if it's ok or not?

Why do you think I'm doing a PhD mate?
I'm useless!

:flush

My brain is telling me everything is allright, but my heart is panicking...

Don't worry its the same stuff, you could use tractor gear oil in BMW gearboxes, they're so agricultural --
