Twice in 2 months one of the pannies fell off when i had some one on the back...both times at slow speed and was a complete mystery to me because I always check that they have been locked on before i go out.

One day I was checkin the locks and found you can unlock the clasps that hold the top box and one pannier by just turning the plastic bit that goes into the lock to stop dirt getting in and this alone unlocked the clasps.
Seems when some one was on the back there back leg rubs up against the lock and it falls off.

The bike is a late 2008 model

Being able to open the locks with the plastic inserts was a common problem a while ago....

.....BMW conteracted the problem by revising the plastic inserts, and making them shorter (...this may have been a 'recall' issue, but well worth asking your friendly BMW dealer to see if he may swap them for you foc).

Being able to open the locks with just a bit of plastic is an issue in itself....

....apparently it only effects keys where the combinations are relatively straight in their key (ie groove) configuration....or put down to the use of grease when inserting the lock barrel, which then prevented the tumblers falling back into place when they had been pushed up by the key(ie the plastic isn't unlocking them, they are still unlocked from being previously unlocked the last time).

That was the common explanations anyway....

....not using grease in the barrels seemed to solve the problem.

You need to ensure the screw knob on the frame is set properly, the top clasp should need a firm push to lock it in.
I drill a 2mm hole through the side clasp when its in the closed position and then put in a securing pin. I use a big aluminium paper clip push it through the hole and bend the end over.
I also screw down the top box woth a M6 screw on the center inside.
