Just got myself some City Lids for the standard Panniers and before I go ahead and bollox the whole the fitting of these I would appreciate any comments from those that have swapped the lids over in the past.

Is it worth swapping over all the rivets for bolts or can one get away with just those on the lid...I will be using the full size lids about once a year.

Any other hints gratefully received.

There was a post here last year that detailed the entire swap over procedure complete with bolt sizes so try a search perhaps. Don't think it was JonnyB that gave the details though.

I put City lids on my panniers. You need to eliminate the rivets and then use small bolts with wing-nuts. It's a bit fiddly to swap them over, but only takes about 5 minutes - it's balancing the lids whilst threading through the bolts that is tricky. You could always ask for help from a second pair of hands, but where's the fun in that?

I remember drilling/cutting the rivets off was a bit tricky - I think the heat of the drill melted a bit of the hole the rivet went through - not a huge problem but I would take it slowly.

Cheers,

Psyko.

Swapped the lids on mine and didn't bother to drill out the rivets on the cases themselves, just those on the lid side of the hinge.. Pure laziness really as i was in a bit of a rush with a trip to Isle of Lewis waiting on the swap. The bolts actually came supplied with the lids (B*W global lids), but there was a post detailing bolts sizes and lengths so you should be able to find out fairly easily (guessing i would say 5mm x 20mm bolts would be right).

Try PM'g Johnny Boxer - he swapped his lids over, but not sure if it was done at source (Motorworks if I remember correctly). Apologies John if I remember details incorrectly

Well remembered....................Fritz and Mark..............however you're not entirely correct, because I bought a complete set of new panniers....... with larger Global lids and kept my old ones with normal GS size lids - both with same key lock barrels.........

So now I have 2 sets sitting on the shelf..........so that I can pick whichever ones I fancy........depending where I'm off to.

The staff at MW supplied me with the new panniers with Global lids (and took the new normal sized lids back into stock) .........they did all the swapping over and recoding the lock barrels............
All for £295

Sorry, good point. You only remove the rivets from the lid bit of the pannier, not from the inner case. I hope I didn't cause any confusion. I used longer bolts than are absolutely necessary on the basis that if one came loose I didn't want it to fall off.

Or have two GS's - one with normal panniers on and the other with the global lids, then you onlly have the hassle of deciding which bike to ride:D :D :D

That would be too easy Psyko..................you can't have too many panniers...............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever you do, don't use a power screwdriver or drill to tighten the bolts after you swap lids. The pannier plastic shatters very quickly.:(
