Off the top of my head, I think the bottom of the "mushroom" should be 28mm away from the top of the lock-nut?

Dont know whether this is correct but I've just adjusted mine by gradually tightening up the pan head socket screw until the case started getting difficult to lock down, and then loosening off just a little and tightening the lock nut.

As far as I could see, the locking mechanism wasnt the primary means of retaining the pannier - it was primarily there to stop tea leaves.

27mm is a good start but it doesnt allow for manufacturing variations

Use the adjusting mushroom to allow the locking mechanism to operate (mushroom not to high) but also to prevent too much movement in the pannier. If you mess around with the adjustment it all becomes apparent.

The repair manual quotes 25-29mm measured between the top of the locating bolt and the top edge of the locking washer.

And:

'A clearly perceptible initial resistance when the case engages indicates that the setting of the locating pin is correct. The locating pin requires adjustment if play becomes perceptible after prolonged use.'

Panniers

Just had mine fitted at the dealers but checked the measurement my self afterwards incase they move at any point in the future

and measured 30mm from top of the mushroom or cap hd screw to the frame ie inc lock nut

I adjusted mine to a very snug fit then went on a 1500km ride including bumpy dirt roads. The third night I tried taking one pannier off and it didn't want to come. So naturally I gave it a good tug (the pannier) and broke the locking mechanism. After an hour dismantling the lock and reseating a metal bar all was well. Lesson learnt, leave a little slack in the fitting.

I've noticed that, after you've released the pannier with the red lever under the handle, the pannier will still be difficult to get off. If so, pull the red tab on the outside of the pannier that actually grips the bolt up. It should 'give' a bit more then you can lift the pannier off cleanly.

Provided you've freed the catch at the front.

I take delivery of my 1200 next week (hopefully). I'm bemused by apparent difficulties in "adjusting panniers". I have no idea yet what all the stuff about mushroosm an dlocknuts means, but no doubt will find out soonenough.

1150 panniers just fitted on. Is this a case (no pun intended) of the manufacturers getting a bit too clever?

Roibn.
