Just wondered if anyone had beefed up the frames and boxes of civils stuff so they would carry more weight than they were designed to, lets face it everyone tends to ram it in,till it bursts.
I wondered what mods have been done.
Ive put in a twin 12v socket for lecktriks too.
On my set im halfway in a project making an 12mm dia ally bar to go between the panniers behind the rear wheel, to stop them flexing in and out at the rear,
And also another brace at the top rear, near to where the rear 6mm bolt attaches, my bracket runs over the top where the oe handle used to be and then down to the pannier frames,to the already there pannier frame bolt.

The panniers are probably approaching the strength of the subframe already...beef them up much more and it won't be the panniers that cause you a minor problem, but the subframe snapping that will cause you a more major one.

DAMHIK.....I've been there :blast

Learn to pack properly, buy lighter kit or ditch whatever it is that you're overpacking- if many many people can go around the world with minimal kit, you're doing it wrong if you're talking seriously about having to do this ;)

point taken

i think Aidan modded his panniers left to right to stop them flapping about in and out, i think that will have to do, oh and go on a diet.
I tend to pack light, but i do like things "bombproof".
i tend to lay it all out on the floor, halve the load and double the money, that normally works.ta fanum

Yes Civil's panniers do flap in and out, I made a second brace to fit between the both panniers fairly low down:thumb

you must have known there was going to be a frame break, theres a tyre iron taped to the pannier frame in readiness....

Nope, not me Nomad mate. :)

I adapted my TT frame om the nearside to bring it in closer to the bike as I run a stubby and have no silencer to consider. It means that I can have same sized boxes on both sides. :thumb2

At the risk of going a bit :topic, Nope, that's just where i keep tyre levers when I'm offroad.

Funnily enough though, the pannier rails (from Vern's rather wonderfully over-strong system) were what we used to brace the frame up, along with the two tyre levers, lots of cable ties and some webbing straps

A couple of hours later, I'd had a fillet of metal welded in there and was back on the road ( well, I would have been, if the ally casing of the starter motor hadn't shattered into 5 bits :blast)

Not pretty, but very functional :thumb2
