I've always liked the look of the BMW oem luggage, seems to fit the bike etc, but after three and a half years of going away and I am finally coming round to the position that I need a change.

There is simply not enough room for two people's stuff for two weeks. This year even with the Lakeland compression bags, we were short of stuff and without washing facilities (or the weather to dry stuff!) we had loads of smelly togs, plus, the compression bags don't stop what you have got from getitng creased to b*ggery. Not a problem for me, but Mrs Moto not so pleased to have creased clothing...

So before the next longer trip, to the Isle of Man next June, we need a re-think? I don't want uneven fittings with the left side wider then the right, so I guess Givi/Kappa panniers are out of the equation.

So that leaves the metal trucks... Touratech Zega? Kiwi Bob's? As they won't get used everyday they need to come off easily, not leave what looks like a scaffold stockpile when off and not cost the earth? Lastly, can be fitted by a mechanical incompetent! Suggestions? ;)

And that is what I'm going to do, "re-think" what I'm taking along and what better products do a better job yet take up less space.

I've always taken a cotton bath towel along. I hardly ever used it, but when I did, it took forever to dry and easily used up twice the space that the 30" x 60" micro fiber towel I just bought uses.

I'm looking at similar solutions to other problems. For example, a single battery charging solution for numerous electronic devices such as cameras, PDA, cell phone, etc.
iGo Mobility Electronics

As for the BMW OEM luggage, I just lived with them and a GiVi Maxia E52 top case for 6 weeks while on tour and I had loads of stuff with me; 2 liters of oil I didn't even need, 2 digital cameras and a full size tripod, a 6" thick stack of maps, just to name a few.

Alex, to save some space or get more in the System pnniers we used three Lakeland vacuum bags, roll and the air is expelled plus used microfibre towels, one from Aldi and one from Lakeland. The bags worked very well and were £14.95 for three, one large and two smaller ones. Mrs Moto had the larger one for the larger pannier and I had the two smaller ones as they fitted reasonably well in each half of the little left sided System pannier.

I keep my one camera in the Touratech Tankbag and also carry a spare battery. I carry the charger and phone charger in the tankbag as well in one of the exterior side pockets, the waterproof cover goes in the other.

I put all this in my Blog for the holiday and have since added pix when I have had time.

I can't say I am a great fan of the ally panniers as none of them reach out and say biuy me "cos I am lovely to look at", but from Lou's link the Touratechs of Den's look a good choice although once again pig ugly!

My mate Belgian John and his patner Inge have Kiwi Bob's on his 1150 ADV and her V-Strom. Not things of beauty (the panniers - although John might be passable in the dark on the Rieperbann)

If you only want top put them on only when off on holidays, Surely that would mean they don't have to be Q/D .

it seems that UK people love the aluminium boxes - mainly cos they road ride - whereas over here they favour the soft panniers - possibly cos of off-roading - don't know :nenau.

andystrapz expedition panniers are HUUGE and are easily carried in by a doorman :)

i haven't found the perfect hard ones yet - but i'd want a quickrelease like the BMW ones too.

I don't care really, don't want to be a Charlie/Ewan copy and despite having Steptoe administer to my machine (service time soon Neil) I am too lazy and cowardly to venture too far off the tarmac piste... into sand and all that.. but want some decent carrying capacity for Mrs Moto's clothes and the creature comforts she craves.

I do like the look of the TT Street Panniers but TT UK trying to put me off them....

Re Oem panniers

Hi Moto
if you like the look of the origional panniers how about the silencer lowering kit from Moto-works and then either get a left hand pannier for a R1100s or alter your origional left pannier by ordering the rear section of the R1100s pannier and fitting your lid hinges and locks.
This way you keep the origional look but have 2 equal sized panniers. :beerjug: :beerjug:
