Has anyone had a bouncing box yet?

I was going over the Hogsback a few weekend's ago when my left Pannier decided to do a kangaroo jump off the bike.

14 miles of searching later I found the box after it had been hit by a number of vehicles.

I was bemused as you can imagine, and took the bike immediately to SPC.

It turned out that the fixing bolts were faulty, and after two visits back they are having to replace whem with locking bolts.

Credit to them, they have replaced my Pannier on warranty, however, it is the thought of what could have happened if the road was busy that concerns me and the fact that someone could have been killed.

Might be a good idea for riders to check their fittings.

Cheers,

Chris

The panniers are NOT a factory fitting and are fitted by the dealer even on a new bike.

The fitting instructions should have been given to you along with the the other documentation, when you read it you will see that the mushroom bolts come standard with stainless steel locknuts and must be adjusted to get a tight fit. Otherwise you have a good chance they will take off.

Sounds like dealer error was the cause.

It is a good idea in my experience to also check the side mounting latches for security.

Thanks Terry, I think the Dealer agrees with you!
They are sorting it out for me, but it dosent' fill one with confidence.

When I picked my bike up from the first service at SPC they had fitted the panniers. I was only a couple of miles from them when I realised that the panniers were loose. Luckily I had made a few additions to the standard tool kit and was able to adjust the mushroom bolts so that the panniers were nice and tight on the bike. Now covered 4000 miles on them without a problem.

My dealer mentioned this when i picked the bike up told me to check them after pannier use for a while as the bolts would probably need re-tightning

And loctite the locking nut into position for extra peace of mind

Good idea!

My LH mushroom worked loose in less than 600 miles over Easter weekend.........and there's no 13mm spanner in the toolkit...........worried for the last 300 miles home....

:p1zzed:

You won't find much of anything in the "Tool Kit"... Sorry, just a gripe we've already discussed...
