Afternoon all.

I have 2 x 37ltr Givi Outback panniers left over from my Multistrada. Was considering putting them on my new Adventure but I'm a bit torn on what to do as I really like the look of the OEM panniers.

Can someone tell me if they are much wider than handlebar width please? Plus having 2 37ltr boxes is a bit staggered with the GS exhaust.

Thanks

Have you looked at Bumot panniers?

Fit the OEM GSA frames and IMHO, look as good as BMW panniers but better made and cheaper.

I've got the pre Evo panniers and top box on mine and am very impressed but the new Evos look better

Hi Mike, I've seen that video when looking for Trekker alternatives. Was going to be one of my questions but you've already answered it!

I saw a new black set on ebay for £699, they do look good. Are they the same dimensions as the OEM's?

Thanks very much

Looking at the Givi website the width of the 37 litre Outback panniers fitted to the bike would be 102cm, which is 2 cm wider than the OEM panniers.

https://www.givi.co.uk/my-motorcycle/product/bmw/r-1250-gs-19--20/optionals/pl5108cam

In the linked picture they show a 37L and 48L. Adds up to 104. However OP has 2 x 37L. The picture displays 2 cm less with on the 37L side, but keep in mind that the rack will offset the panier by several cm to stay clear of the can, so 2 x 37l will probably build less than 100cm and less than the with of the engine.

But frankly, occasionally I see people ride around with this asymmetric solution. I'm sure it works ok, but it looks weird.
If this was my choice, I would have sold the Givis and bought panniers that offers symmetry.

Thats what I'm thinking too. Think I've made my mind up and will sell the Trekkers and opt for some OEM or Bumot panniers.

Are they the same dimensions as the OEM's?

The dimensions of the panniers according to the Adventure Bike Shop are:-

35L / 31L – Width 86 cm
40L / 36L – Width 92cm
45L/41L - Width 98 cm

I don't know how these compare to the OEM but I have the 45/41 conbo and they are not as wide as the handlebars

My previous bike with Bumot panniers and top box, taken from the front

Hope this helps

Mike

BMW OEM panniers are not sold as waterproof, the givi ones are.

I had the Givi Trekker Outback top box on my last bike, never let a drop of water in. On my second set of SW Motech Trax Adventure panniers and top box, and even though I do use the waterproof inner bags, they've proved watertight even in the most horrendous downpours.

BMW OEM panniers are not sold as waterproof, the givi ones are.

I've had more than 1 set of OEM panniers, and when they are brand new, they usually do not leak.

However, the fasteners are riveted to the case. And after some use (and abuse), all the shacking and rocking of the bike will eventually make the rivets leak e little.

The topbox, with the fasteners at the bottom, seems to be less prone to leaking. Also, if you take a fall, the chances are that the case may be disformed more or less, also causing leaks. Hence the BMW solution for the strong and waterproof inner bag.

All in all I find the OEM cases of good quality and well built, but they are still limited to the law of physics.

I also have a Givi topbox. I find it of a lesser build quality than the BMW box. For instance, the top and bottom corners of the box, Givi cuts the plates straight, and the put on plastic pieces to make the corners, whereas BMW shapes the plates at the corners, weld them, and then puts a piece of plastic on the outside for good looks. Never the less, I'm happy with my Givi as well.
Also, when using an innerbag, the top edge on the BMW boxes is more or less flush with the sidepanels, making it easy to slide a fully loaded innerbag in and out, whereas the Givis (at least the one I have, Outback trekker) have a lip that protruding inwards, and this makes it a pain to pull up a loaded innerbag.
And the OEM boxes allow you to lock the box without needing a key every time you open it. This is very handy for the top-box. For the panniers, less so. And the key for the bike fits.

Still, Ii have several friends that are quite happy with their Givis, so I guess there is no right or wrong. It boils down to personal preference...

I know there are other brands as well, but I have no experience with them. But owners I have spoken to seems quite happy with their choice as well...:D

I've got a Bumot top case arriving this week. Thinking about having Mosko Moto Backcountry panniers. My thinking is, if the bike falls over then the soft pannier will not be impacted by the fall.

Does anyone in here have any experience with their softbags for the OEM GSA rack?

I have both Bumot aluminium Defender panniers and the soft Xtremada. The latter are my preferred choice . Far more usable due to the flexible sides .

Nice panniers those. Might be ideal to stash my work stuff as opposed to the rigid metal ones. Thanks for the pictures.

Looks great :okay

Thank you for sharing :D

I would only put the original bags on a GS if for the only reason that they use the same key that came with the bike !
Aluminum or Varios but I prefer the aluminum ones because they are slightly bigger and top loading...Soft bags are only good if you actually ride and fall in the dirt...otherwise useless:D
