Paranoia

I wouldn't get paranoid, the trick with bmw is never to buy into the launch hype and get the newest released model instead buy the latest of the old model bike you can afford .
A post 2011 twin cam is very well sorted , same as the later 1150's (compare a 2004 1150gsa against a 2004 1200gs for reliability).
BMW still seem to think that customers are their product testers and release each new model at least 18 months before it is fully sorted so that we can do it for them

My mate had endless problems with the clutch on his 950 Adventure along with Carb icing problems. His 990 had a jerky throttle response.

the clutch cylinder failed on mine on the way from purchase! known issue. icing yes even with carb heaters, had to buy silkolene fuel mix at anything around or less than 2 degrees, rode the 990 and didn't like it, now my 2011 Aprilia 1200 has benefited from an updated fuel map, very much smoother and 15% better mpg (which helps when tank is 3 galls) as it says elsewhere development can happen on the hapless 'fresh out of the box' punters and maybe with electronics and software that's to be expected in a way, they would never do the same miles in pre launch testing

and as for reliability having had a guzzi lunch a piston on the bypass I must be a mug for having Italian again? (but so far so good)
