Anyone got a usable and complete PC for sale or collection thats old but servicable.

about 5 yrs old - 1ghz (or more )

i'm in the uk for a week and would like to upgrade the the old folks 500mhz PC so they can get broadband and start using a webcam etc for web comms to Aus.

I could get some bits off ebay and build one - but obviously an oldy but goody would be perfect.

i'll pay for it (up to 150 ) - doesn't have to be a freebie - only want the main box - no peripherals.

must be in southern England for collection 10-20 feb.

alternatively - are there any new box deals around that would suit ATM ??

all offers, tenders and info gratefully accepted :thumb

Thanks
Phil

If no joy with a used box, you might want to try Dell Outlet.
Go to www.dell.co.uk and click on the Outlet button.

Start shopping and then sort the Dimensions by price. Displayed prices exclude VAT.

Some tips:
1) Check just after 36 minutes past the hour, as that seems to be when the 'automated' sales process puts systems (back) on for sale - some seem to 'drop off' during the hour and then appear again at 36mins past...

2) Once you've put one in your basket, scroll down in the shopping basket and select the 'extra' discount offerred (but not automatically selected !!). Upto an extra £100 off !

Note that they don't come with a monitor. Also, worth cross checking with the price of new system (including monitor) to make sure its a good saving.

I've picked up a few base spec PCs for family from here. Even picked up my 8300 as well! And it could be delivered to the door !

Hope the above helps

No offence Steve but Phil don't go near Dell, I work in the industry of PC's, Laptops, Servers etc and Dell have one of the worst reputations for after sales support, yes they are cheap but that says everything about the company.

Phil pity your not coming to Scotland could have got you a decent PC for your budget no problem, good luck!!!!! :thumb

Robbo - no offence taken.

I work in IT as well and yes, we've seen some recent problems with the quality of their corporate Optiplex range. IMHO, designing and building to meet extreme cost control requirements for large corporates results in taking a step too far occasionally. Our PC support team only see the duff ones.

Personally, I'm on my third Dimension (!) , and have about 3 current systems running within the extended family. And so have no problem recommending them.
My brother has an Inspiron 6000 laptop which suffered a hard disc failure (not a good thing in itself) but Dell shipped him a new disc (next day) together with a complete set of installation discs - now a happy bunny. Occasionally the hardware will fail, but its what happens then that counts.

I guess its each to their own experience.

I work for an 'end user' ... nothing wrong with some corporate loyalty :thumb ... untill they pick on my choice of transport... :(

Good luck with the box Phil ! :D

Check out http://www.hotukdeals.com Tend to have dreals not widely known about, including Dells cheaper than the Dell site (brand new)

Dells down on the left hand side amongst all the other companies.

Got my mum a pc for £150 last year, does all they need and more.

I have an old one about that spec you can have. Just taken it off my network. Windows 98 etc. All seems to work ok. Yours for nowt as I could not work out what to do with it. You just have to collect it as I am not lugging.
PM me if interested and I will look up the full spec by plugging it back into a monitor etc.
