In five weeks time I am treating Mrs R to three nights in Paris care of the InterCity Train. We've been a few times before but almost always aimed for the tourists sites. I'd like to see some of the 'real' Paris this time, away from the crowds. Any suggestions?

There is a small guide available from WH Smiths which gives you things to see in the 16 different districts. My Mrs bought it for us. Am trying to find it now. It allows you to plan a few things which are close together so you don't waste your day walking around unnecessarily.
Be aware that things shut at 5 very promptly.
The museum of Modern art has a small restaurant which sells a buffet style lunch, very popular with the locals. Good food at a reasonable price for Paris. We did the museum and then went on to the Eiffel Tower. After that we went on to the Sacre Coeur. Take the bus you get to see things as you travel.

Googling things like, 'Little seen Paris' will turn up all sorts of oddities.

For example:

and its subsequent link to:

Fill your boots, as they say:

I would certainly arm yourself with Michelin's excellent Green Guide, too.

Thanks for everybody's advice. Bill, We always visit the Montmartre and as our hotel is only fifteen minutes away, she shall almost certainly go there. The book looks just right also. We enjoy the Musee d'Orsay also and found it during our last visit. We're only there for three nights but those links have given me food for thought. Our favourite French film is 'Amélie' which was set in the Montmartre area so we intend to find some of the locations.

I'm taking 30 teenagers to Paris in may so will be mainly visiting the more touristry sights...
  • Mont Marte then meal at La Boheme du Tertre
  • Eiffel Tower
  • Arc De Triomphe
  • Champs Elysees
  • Shopping at LeHalles
  • Notre Dame

Also a trip to Disneyland :eek

.

I'll be working in Paris next week, at France Television, if anyone fancies a beer in or around Issy, let me know :D:beerjug:

.

We had a dander round the famous Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Interesting place to stroll around and away from the hustle and bustle of Paris. The surrounding area is far enough away from the centre to be considered REAL Paris
Go have a look around, metro stations abound there, so if you're there for a few days, get a 3 day pass. Well worth it.

Bon voyage :-)

Can't remember the correct name but apparently the Catacombs are fascinating. Unconnected but we were walking through Arondissement 14 one night and the fairly well dressed guy In front of us stopped and removed one of the large circular concrete drain/sewer covers and dropped down into the darkness, apparently there are lots of homeless living there and also some people who regular use this network to get into official buildings? Very odd sight indeed.
