Its definitely a spring retaining clip, sort of similar to an airbox clip (but not).....

Is it the spring clip that holds the sidelight bulb / bulb holder in the back of the headlight ?

I thought it could be but can’t see how it would fit. The parking light holder is currently not secured into the headlight shell which doesn’t seem right.

Is it possible some on here with much better knowledge may see this part as I do as being a badly malformed brake mounting part for the r80 front disc brake?
Sorry in advance if this wouldn't be that part.

Like you said, I cant see anywhere on the bike diagrams a part resembling what he has shown.
That was the closest I could find......yup call a friend.

Thanks chaps glad I’ve not missed something obvious deep in the total rebuild. I’m guessing it dropped in the box from something other than my R80. Almost there now just got to fight to get the fuel tap cover back on against the spring.

Any chance it's from a tent pole, trampoline leg, sun umbrella or similar- the pop out spring loaded button inside a an extending or adjustable pole.

Otherwise, I have seen similar springs on car fuel doors/flaps.

Whatever, at least you now know it's not R80 related.

Very clever. I do have a bike with SRAM gears and a bag of spares that sits close to where the R80 bits were kept so I believe it. No wonder I couldn’t fit it in my headlight !
