It's with a sad heart that me and my 1290 SAR are parting ways.
During the 6 months I have owned it I've had far too many items fail on the bike to allow me to trust it.
Replacement fork sliders, fuel filler cap and just this week the oil temperature sensor.
I'm not slagging these bikes off as I know there are bad one offs in every brand / model but it appears that's what I have.
Awesome bike in every possible way, but she has to go.
I've cut a deal to px against a super tenere with cash coming my way. I had one for 2 years and 32k miles and never had an issue, I know they aren't fast, but it'll do what I need it to do.
I'll have a raft of almost new extras that I'll be putting up in the for sale section over the coming days...... Apduro panniers, power parts heated seats, Leo vince silencer and givi rear rack....... Plus some other odds and sods.
I'll be sad to see the bike go. :-(

I will be interested in a complete Apduro set.

Shame you not happy with it. It seem these bikes have their fair share of issues.

I personally had main switch failure. I was happy for it to be fixed in under 24h.

Thanks for the reply. My bikes a 2017 model with 11k miles on it. As they only come with a 2 year warranty, shortly the issues that the bike develops would have been mine to pay for.... Gulp.
As some point in the future I may return, but probably to an 1190 which has less electronic wizardry to go wrong.
Wish they made a bare knuckle version with none of the bells and whistles, as the motor in the 1290 is in another league compared to all other big adventure bikes.

And yet I had zero issues in just under 2 years and 12k miles.

Likewise not had any significant issues with my 1190 and 1290 - but understand how annoying it is if you do have problems.

cbrgaz - what was the fork slider issue? The other 2 problems appear fairly minor and once sorted should not re-occur.

I'd be interested in the heated seat, how much would you like for it?

Hi,

The fork issue was due to the chrome plating failing. It was rust bursting through from the surface of the material that was hard chromed.
If you look into the filler cap and oil temperature sensor, then you'll discover it isn't as isolated as you think. To put it into context, if I had had to pay for the fork bottoms parts alone would be £1300, filler cap £248 and the oil temperature sensor £108....... Wish I could accept that this run of 3 items was my lot with the bike for some considerable time, but my trust in the bike has gone.
I have only done 2k miles on it...... Its a gamble to keep it as far as I'm concerned.
Like I said I'm not slating the bike, just consider mine as a Friday backshift bike.

3 items, rather minor and simple fixes.

I take it you have never owned a Ducati !

New fork legs are hardly minor........but I guess it depends on your wallet.

I recall someone else mentioning peeling fork legs.... perhaps not quite an isolated issue.

Who was the previous owner, and how did they look after it/ store it?

I didn't know the previous owner, but from the condition of the bike it was stored under cover and we'll pampered. I always take great care of the bike, so the faults arent weather related.
The lads at the ktm dealership the forks were a first for them, but the filler cap has been a repeat offender for them on the 1290's.

At the moment, I’ve got a full backup of 2 year warranty. However only after less than two weeks I’ve had a first issue with the bike.

While fitting pannier rack on Wednesday afternoon, all of a sudden bike decided to turn on ignition on its own, flash up the screen, turn it self off again, then back again, the off, the steering lock went mad trying to lock itself while bars were straight then screen back on, off, on, off..... this was going of for some 4-5 minutes with no response from my inputs on the grey ignition button.
Then it stopped.
Tried the button, no joy, held key next to antenna, still no joy, repeated same procedure again and again, no joy. Put the key on a rear rack and it worked. Started the bike and no more than 20-30 seconds later it killed it self as if someone pressed ignition button. Steering lock went mad again.

Rang dealer, bring it in he said. I said I won’t be comfortable riding if it starts playing up again in the morning. Not do much the turning it self off while I am riding on a motorway, but the steering lock trying to do its thing.

Took it in the morning after spending 10-15 minutes running the bike with anticipation of it doing it’s weird shit again. Diagnosis, main switch failure, got it replaced and so far do good.

Still 10 days old this bike, what else I am thinking now..... switches shouldn’t be failing if they are designed to be fitted to a vehicle that is exposed to the elements.

Should I have kept GSA? Maybe, but not without its own troubles.....

Have to say, when I was looking to buy a 1290R the other week at Premier, the manager brought in a 1290S for me to show off the instrument panel. Wouldn't power up the display at all, and he gave up after several attempts :augie
