Monday morning, using the PC which is running very slowly. Decide to reboot the system and during the reboot get this msg "File missing or corrupt Windows Root\System 32\hal.dll" System will not reboot, oh sh*t it looks terminal! After trying numerous things it is obvious I am going to have to restore Windows which means a reformat of the hard disk....but hey I'm not worried cos in Feb I bought an external hard drive and since then I've been taking daily incremental backups. :clap Even so I was still a bit twitchy when I hit enter to reformat  So Windows is restored, although it takes an age to reboot now and when it is up the egg timer is constantly flashing next to the cursor :nenau oh and some keyboard characters are not where they should be. :nenau

I have managed to restore all my data back to last Friday :clap I have reinstalled all my software and applications :clap I even managed to resolve a problem I had accessing the net and with numerous device drivers needing to be loaded for stuff like sound etc. :bounce1

So can anybody help me with the minor niggles I have with the time taking to boot the system, the constant flashing egg timer and the keyboard set up? Perrleeeeaasssee :bow

Oh and I can only endorse what Cookie said earlier this week, if you don't do so already.....get an external HD and take backups....you will save yourself so much grief!

dunno about the egg timer, but you have almost certainly have the keyboard set to US English.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Under Pick a category, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.

3. Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click Regional and Language Options. The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.

4. On the Languages tab, click Details. The Text Services and Input Languages dialog box appears.

5. Under Installed services, click Add. The Add Input language dialog box appears.

6. In the Input language list, click the language that you want. For example, English (UK).

7. Delete the US keyboard. You will probably need a reboot to accomplish this.

8. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.

Also take a look in the Event Log (Start , Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer) and see if it's throwing up any problems. Probably something trying to load from a drive that's no longer there or something.
