Are TFT & LCD screens on monitors the same thing?

Looking at replacing our aging & bulky monitor for something that takes up less space.

I see that some now come with a HDMI socket - is this for games consoles?

Am I better off buying a 17" or 19" flat screen TV with PC inputs & using that as a monitor & spare TV or just buying a standalone monitor?

Any features/makes/deals I should be looking out for?

Thanks in advance ;thumb

I just got a Dell 24" TFT screen today after a whopping great box. Go for it !

HDMI is for a digital output but they work perfectly with an anologue (the type you've been using) output.

I got mine from www.overclockers.co.uk which seem to be a lot cheaper than www.cclonline.com who were voted "Best online retailer".

From overclockers, it arrived first thing in the morning, exactly on the day specified, absolutely first class service, I can recommend :thumb

loads of different options available depends what you want, need it for and if you've got stack of money or not.

We use Eizo very spec monitors only, can be colour balanced to meet some pretty tight guidelines.

HP, Dell, Samsung LG it's all good stuff. after 19 inches things get expensive but there are deals to be had.

You can get kit from office suppliers such as staples or if you can get into costco in reading they have right nice units from sony. Some with built in speakers and TV receivers.

Get amongst it:thumb2

GNR are pretty good as well, they used to come with a 5 year no quibble 'On site' warranty included in the price as long as you registered the unit with them:thumb2

I read "ageing and bulky"

yeah terrific, lots of good advice about cheap deals. However, before being relieved of your hard-won cash, Go delve into your computer specifications and settings and find the graphics card. Look at the (graphics card) details and make sure it can output the correct resolution to display on a 16:9 (widescreen) monitor. If not, everything will look totally squished.

Definitely not. TV resolution - even HDTV - is much lower than that required for computer use. It's OK to plug a Media Centre computer into a telly, it's designed for that, but if you're using the computer as a computer rather than a glorified VCR then you definitely need a monitor.

if you spend a lot of time in front of it, get the best one you can afford.

they are very much not all the same.
