I've been told I need a firewall PCI card and video editing software so I can properly edit (read bugger about blindly in the dark losing all my home movie footage)!!
Can any one point me in the direction of a place I can buy a cheap firewall card etc. PC World seem to think the thick end of £80 is reasonable just for the card! Maybe it is can anyone give me some advice?

Wookie Are your home movies digital or analogue?

The reason I ask is that if they`re digital then a firewire (I think thats what you meant by firewall) PCI card will do just fine, they`re about £15 then you just need some software.
If they`re analogue then you`ll need an analogue/digital bridge such as Dazzle and they`re a bit dearer probably about £80-£100.

yep..

same as above..

firewire card needed..
check out www.scan.co.uk

LN2576 4 Scan Port Firewire PCI Card with Cable 400Mbps £11.15

LN6209 MRI 3 Port Firewire-2 (800MBps) Card PCI (2x800 1x400) £49.94

not bad eh..

what software you gonna edit your stuff on..

do u have a big harddrive?

u know you need a decent pc to do this, with lots of ram and a pretty big harddrive..

transferring video to digital is tricky enough if you want v good quality..

compressing files to fit is the usuall way, but then u get small sceen sizes and loss of detail and sound quality..

what eactly do you want to do..

there are companies out there who will do it for you if you wnat.. a lot quicker and better and wont cost a fortune..

I use Pinnacle Studio 8. It comes with the Firewire card & software. It does everything that I need it to do - I just plug my camcorder into the card & put the video on to my hard drive. I then cut & paste the scenes, add music, transition effects etc. When I'm done, it tapes the end result back into my camcorder.

I got mine from Costco for £28.00 but you can also get it from here:-

I use a Canopus ADVC-100 box (about £230) to convert any form of analogue signal to digital (and back again if required). Then use Pinnacle or similar software to author the video and write it to a DVD.

There are loads of reasonably priced video editing software packages available, including the free one that comes with Windows XP.

It's much easier and more successful if you use a second hard disk dedicated to video capture and you do need as much RAM as you can get and a fairly high end processor for the editing (not for the capture).

Have a look at http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ for loads of help, info and advice.

If I can be of any more help please ask.
