PC won't boot after downloading new drivers

I'm fcking sick of computers.

I had been having problems with crackling noises when playing audio through my SB! Live card and in another forum I was recommended to load some super dooper drivers from a comapny called kxproject. The recommendations on the website were very positive and I had a look at their forum which seemed to suggest these drivers were worth getting.

I duly downloaded the latest stable version and although it took an age to install an it all seemed to finish Ok and the PC restarted.

However it failed on Windows intialisation with "Invalid VXD dynamic link call from VSYNTHD(01) + 00002D7FC to device "3A72", service 1" .

The PC won't boot up at all now and is asking me to reload Windows which I don't want to do because 1) I can't find the disk and 2) because I don't want to wipe out my system.

I've booted into Safe Mode and and run an uninstall on the drivers using their downloaded set up program but it's stil lf'cked and I'm getting the same error on boot up.

I don't expect anybody here to know anything about these drivers but does anyone know a way of getting back to a previous configuration? It's my old Win98SE PC that I use for all my music compositions and emails so I can't afford to not have it working.

Assuming I found my Win 98 disk is it possible to reinstall Windows without wiping the disk?

Cheers

Yes......

But not without the disc or being prepared to download illegal software.

If it's not fixed by solutions posted here by mid day tommorrow Dick, gimme a call....Today was my last day at work so I'm free tommorrow and a ride down to Brighton with me big pack of discs might be a good diversion ;)

PS My copy of W98 is pukka and legal btw ;)

Thanks Bill, much appreciated. I'm about to disappear in the bowels to try and find my own Win 98 disc. I think I lent it to someone and I'm not sure it ever came back.

Hopefully I won't need to call but .....

Aha, found the disk.

Now if I run setup from it is it going to reconfigure the C drive or will it just set up Windows again?

Feck it all I've had enough. I'm getting a brandy and leaving it for the evening.

Have you tried unplugging the munged card and rebooting Windows?

The system should reconfigure itself using motherboard resources.

Then, re-install Windows with the card plugged in and hopefully Windows will either install its own drivers for the card or ask you to provide the OE disk.

Thanks for the idea. I'll try that later.

PC back and running :D

Boot into safe mode, then "command mode only" then "scanreg/restore".

Someone on the forum that suggested loading the bloody drivers in the first place came up with the solution.

Internet is weird eh? Gets you into all sorts of shit then gets you out of it (sometimes ;) )

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Bill, thanks for offering to come down to Brighton (especially as its so feckin cold at the moment), that's far above the call of duty and I'll buy you a breakfast at Wessons if you're ever down this way :D

NP Dick...glad you got it sorted :thumb

FWIW, change to XP if you possibly can.....it's much much better than W98 and you just don't get driver conflicts or problems.....it's far more stable and it makes networking a doddle too.

Oh yeah, and after the scare yesterday, do a backup of everything today ;)

I'm afraid I've had serious problems with drivers on XP as well so there's no way I'm moving to that. I'm not sure my old PC is powerful enough anyway.

I'm not too bad on the backup front as I run a seprate hard disk with most of my important stuff on so if the worse really does come to the worse I can move the hard disk into another PC.

But it does remind me to back up last weeks music stuff to the 2nd hard disk.

You need to be paranoid about backup for anything really important - I use tape, occasional DVD burn, and an online backup service for the business critical stuff (BT Digital Vault, but there are others - under a tenner a month for a fair amount of space - not sure about Win98 compatability tbh)

Yep I understand that but I reckon a 2nd hard disk is not too bad as a backup medium, certainly no worse than a DVD although I might look at web based backup as well.
