Help required please , my computer [ Dell pc running Visat Home Premium ] won't recognise blank DVD disks [ it has worked fine in the past ] , I've tried several different makes [ Sony is one ] .
Is there a way to get the pc to recognise them all .
Answers please in very basic pc language , as I am still in the dark ages when it comes to these things .

Thanks
Steve

Do a Google search on the problem - you will get some ideas (about 5000)

The most obvious thing to do is this:

Right click on "My Computer" select "Properties" click on the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Manager" button.
In Device Manager go down to where it says "DVD/CD-ROM drives" click on the small box next to it to open a drop-down list showing all CD and DVD drives connected to your computer.
Right click on the drive that is giving you the trouble and click on uninstall, when asked to confirm device removal click OK
then reboot the PC

Windows will reinstall and assign the proper driver.

If that doesn't work - keep googling.

Hey Eddie,

I tried all of what Mikepg suggests a while back when I had similiar troubles. I also tried System Restore which worked for a while but in the end I admitted defeat and went and bought a new drive. Cured the problem.Cost about £35 for a " brown box" one at PC World.

recognising blank dvd's

Pat and Mike,
Thanks for your help and advice .
I have Nero 8 on my pc and that seems to work , so I will stick with that for the moment [ I assume this means that the drive is ok ] .

Eddie,

I totally misread your original posting. I was assuming that your drive was not reading any DVD's at all.:blast

Sorry about that.:o

Pat ,
Prolly my fault - I posted the message before trying to use Nero 8 . Someone else has told me that I need to change the relevant DVD settings in Nero 8 , but I can't find them [ bear in mind I'm a pc dinosaur ] .

Thanks ,

Steve

As I understand it there are two different formats for blank DVDs, so you have to make sure you buy the right ones for your DVD writer. Either DVD+ or DVD- e.g DVD+RW or DVD-RW. I bought a cheap pack of each from Asda to find out which mine used, hit lucky and tried the correct one first so took the unopened pack back.
