For the past X million years I have been using my trusty Palm Vx PDA.

It has now become un-trusty and keeps freezing and I fancy a change so... I'm thinking of a replacement.

I have a few fairly simply criteria -

1. I need to be able to synchronise the PDA with the desktop software on both my machine and that of my PA. I currently do this by having a sync cradle on my PC and the same on my PAs. Its a bit clunky but it works. Is there some way of doing this over a network so that she can see what I can and add dates to my diary on her PC which are then synchronised with the PDA?

2. I dont use it for much more than diary and address / phone book - couldnt be arsed crunching excel spreadsheets on something the size of a fag packet....

3. Colour screen would be nice

4. e mail access not that important... I'm not sure I honestly want my e mail following me around.

5. Doesnt have to be Outlook compatable as long as it meets criteria of point 1. Proprietary diary software OK

Should I be considering one of these all in one phone / PDA jobbies? My phone is coming up for replacement too. However some of the units that I have seen dont look particularly ergonomic to use as phones cos they look like.....PDAs

Budget couple of hundred squids max

Whats it all about eh?

Guidance thru the techno maze appreciated...

If you've got already some Palm software you use then think about a Palm Tungsten - I've got a T3 which does all you want, with a bit of fiddling. I've got it syncing via both bluetooth and a wireless network card (although that cost an extra fifty notes or thereabouts).

I've tried the PocketPC things and they are perfectly okay but I had a couple of Palm programs I liked when I moved on from my Palm III so went down that route. Be warned that the b@stards have changed Graffitti so you have to learn new letters.

I got all carried away and have now equipped mine with a keyboard and a GPS. The keyboard means I can use it to create significantly long documents anywhere without cramp in the pen hand. Palm have also put out a proper pen sized stylus (with pen, torch and laser pointer included) which helps too.
