Just got back from a trip during which I went to Peenemunde museum. It's well worth going to, and if anyone fancies it and needs any info I am happy to discuss.

Also went to the Zeppelin Museums at Tonder and Friedrichshafen (also has Dornier Museum).

Yes, have also been there. Very interesting museum and well worth the visit.

Also worth a visit to the adjacent harbour, where they have a Soviet cold war era nuclear missile submarine. We were amazed at how basic and heath-robinson it was inside. I would have been more than a little iffy at going out in that!

Is the museum new? I've always fancied going to Peenemunde but after Googling it a few years ago there didn't seem to be much there at the time, apart from a few overgrown concrete bases. It just seemed a long way to go just to look at a bit of WWII concrete, so I never bothered.

Photo's.... what we all need are photo's :D
Exactly. You know the drill. Bang a few photos on and this could be a 5 pager. :D

I N T E R E S T E D ..... more details please. It's on my 'to do' list ;)

I have a book of nine suggested motorcycle touring routes, centred on Hamburg.

These don't go out as far a Peenemunde, which is right on the Polish border, but may make some interesting riding around this little visited part of Germany and up into the Danish peninsula.

I will see if I can carve them into a Garmin friendly format sometime over the winter. To be sure the geography of the area is predominantly flat, cut across with small roads and canals; that doesn't make it a bad area to visit per-se, just different.

The book is one of a series. I tripped over it whilst trying to find something via Google to help a Tosser find a map! It's this one:

I don't speak a word of German, but a map is a map, a picture a picture and a route card a route card.

The museum is in the old power station there. They needed a power supply for their work, which of course helped bring it to the attention of the Allies.

There is a V1 and a V2 in the grounds of the power station/museum and a good exhibition inside. And, just outside the grounds there is the Peenemunde Harbour where the soviet submarine is located.

So, all in all well worth a visit.

Re Wapping's comments/post: I have been along most of the coastal region between Lubeck and the Polish border. Yes, it is flat, but nice countryside. Definately worth a visit are lubeck, Schwerin, Stalssund, Wismar, Griefswald, Rostock & heringsdorf (at the Polish border).

You can tell that you are in the former East germany because all the main roads have been rebuilt and tend to be as smooth as you could wish, but very straight. Stay off the main roads and they are much more interesting: quite narrow and tree-lined (a la France!).
