You might have a point there. But I'm not going to worry too much about it cos I don't like diving and I'm not planning a trip to Nappaul :-) and I'd have to send it back to America for a warranty claim. If it does fall off it's prodably going to bounce anyway.
Mind you I forgot to state a colour so I hope I dont get an orange one!

fair point but it depends on where, how far, how long, and what you really require to travel light. This setup meets the requirements of travelling light. Small, compact, and unobtrusive. It's certainly compact and the weight is negligible due to the location. By putting your tools dead centre over the frame you don't notice the weight at all during the ride. I bought my Givi top box because my lower volume exhaust side case was taken up by my tools. I camp in fairly remote areas of northern Ontario and Quebec year round. Nearly every weekend in the summer months is on the bike and off to some remote place. I'm well away from home, cell phone coverage in some areas, and definitely any dealerships. So bringing a bit more tools and spares than the average rider is a must. Now with this I've dropped the top heavy Givi in favour of a dry bag for my tent,sleeping bag, and sleeping mat, while leaving the sides free for food and clothes.

Pelican probably says no to drilling cutting etc. but if you use silicon it brings it back to spec and since the holes that are drilled, sit between the box and the seat pan the chance of rain water getting in is negligible. In any event the chance of you worrying about your tools being submersed and rusted will be superceded by the fact that you just put your bike in the lake. :nono
 
I just got the pelican box, getting the mount end of week, just wanted to check if you went dead center on the attaching pin and clamp. It looks like it on the picture but I wanted to double check
 
the mounting plate was dead center between the rear most ribs on the bottom. Note I put the opening end of the bag to the drivers side. From there put on the mounting plate first. The locking bolt needs to be placed a bit further rearward than the ribbing allows for so a bit of dremel is required to get it set right.

Does that mean to the left (Canadian driver), to the right (UK driver), or to the front (GSer)? Probably (completely obviously when you've got the box in front of you?) to the front, but I'm a bit of a pedant , and mine hasn't arrived yet :rolleyes:

From the rear of the bike, left side. The side-stand side has the open end of the pelican.
 
peli case mounting.

i like the look of your "adapted" case - but why drill holes in it?

i use a peli 1520 case for tools for work i have used the same case for 3 years and taken it round the world on several occasions, despite several hundred flights and one bike accident (with case strapped to bike) i have NEVER had any of the contents damaged (calibrated surveying equipment).

- it weighs in at 20kgs or so - i normally use left and right bmw panniers, and my 1520 in place of the pillion seat (if i use the bmw top box i also mount this in place of pillion seat-not on rear rack)

i simply use a half inch endless ratchet strap (metal ratchet / webbing strap) and fasten over top of case / under seating tray on bike. it takes seconds to fit.

easy - no adaption required - a half inch ratchet strap is a much more secure way to mount the case - it won't budge - not even if you throw your bike down the road with it mounted.....as i have done!

if you wanted to you could still lock it in the same manner.

BTW - if buying a peli case get it shipped from USA - much cheaper than UK - if you can't wait that long Ocean Leisure in London (at Charring x) have a comprehensive range in stock.

SQD8R, I can't figure the female nut part, looked on my bicycle and can't see what you mean... :confused:

Do you have a picture or a link to an online supplier?

The plate part was easy, I just need to sort out that little "locking in place" detail :)

Pelican case instead of passenger seat

Anyone who wants a Pelican at a reasonable price give this guy a try

I picked up his e-Bay details from this thread and dropped him a mail. Jim sent me an invoice and I paid him in good faith via PayPal - avoided the auction and buy-it-now horlicks. I didn't get the e-Bay security, but having checked Jim's feedback I considered the risk to be low - My experience is that Jim is genuine and 10 days after paying for it, the case has arrived together with a combination lock and the foam inserts

At the conversion rate on Tuesday 27 Sep I paid just under £68 all in for a case, padding and a lock - Jim deals with all the excise stuff

I can recommend and look forward to fitting the case :thumb
 
Cut and weld

I couldn't find that part that would extend the bolt of the lock pin so I cut it....and welded a longer bolt on it. Works great, love the case and the fact that you can remove it easily but I leave it on permanently with the emergency stuff so that I don't have to use my top case all the time.
 
Not the best welder!

No welding skills whatsoever but here is a picture of the pin, mounts a the bottom of the case and case on the bike
