People deserting BMW.?

I’ve noticed a lot of people selling up recently
Is this because of ..?
1, dealers attitude.?
2, Quality issues with the bikes.?
3. Price & resale values..?
4, Better product out there..?
5, Generally leaving biking.?
6, Dealer service schedules & inconstant pricing.? Is every year too often given some guys don’t do many miles..

Thoughts guys..

Maybe a lesson for everyone
 
I have 3 mates who have recently gone for other brands, 2 1200GS riders and a 1200R. 2 went due to quality issues . The other due to high depreciation due to him doing high mileage.
 
The Ewan and Charlie effect has worn off, along with price rises.

Bmw has taken the same route as Harley Davison who are the kings at this, both now aim marketing at your dreams, (make a life ride).
Personally having owned bikes for 35+ years, I find bmw quality is not as good as Honda, but the back up support is better. I also think BMW has overall better dealership backup. All at the end of the day are in it to make money.
This is my last GS, I knew when I purchased it, now I'm just going to enjoy it.
 
I look at this all slightly differently.

I save up and buy my bikes outright. Do the best deal I can at the time and generally buy brand new, but always pay £150 deposit on my Credit Card.

I then service and maintain them myself.

I don't worry about Warranty because the Sales of Goods and Services Act, Section 75 Credit Act, and Buy with Confidence Scheme from Motorcycle Industry Association covers me.

'Warranty'.... in my opinion is nothing more than a good will gesture, but you have to pay them for the privilage and dance to their tune. Its nothing more than a smoke screen to fill your heart with fear of not complying with their 'insurance plan' - which you all pay for. and it's stalling tac-tics to move you away from your actual rights under UK Law.

I've brought two UK Manufacturers to Court refusing to comply with their 'warranty' and settled both in my favour. They shit themselves when you apply your actual rights, and not play their 'warranty' game.

In my experience with many different dealers

A) They do not understand UK Law and presume Warranty is the golden ticket. It isnt.

B) Workmanship is very expensive and shoddy in a lot of instances.

C) My bikes have come home more broken than when they went in... on some occasions (and that's before I pissed them off).

Resale value... ha

Dealers will rip you off as best they can. Bullshit reasons why your bike is worthless.

I remove all my farkles and sell seperatley before sale. Then sell privately.

Never had an issue with home servicing and people love the condition of my bikes.

Fuck the system, it's toxic, it's broke.

Love my bikes, love my riding, love my life. Take control, it isn't hard once you stop listening to the bullshit. Oh, and I don't have any hassle, still have a good relationship with most of my dealers when I need to use them.

Over the years i have owned approx 12 gss i have had most of the models produced,my last two lcs had issues mainly down to poor quality. The dealers i use have been mint and sorted things asap,must say BMW backup is probably the best on the market,(just aswell really) .Bought an s10 yamaha in May its only been in the dealers for its first service,bike is really underated dont know why they arnt more popular? Must say if bmw sort things i would have another one but at the moment i will just read about all the issues on UKGSER:rob:rob
 
I don’t think it has anything to do with warranty/ resale values/ quality or dealer service, more to do with the fact that there’s LOADS of other options now.

BMW are still ahead of the game on most of those points, but if you want a large capacity adventure bike now, there are a lot more alternatives than there were a few years ago.

Couple that with some attractive finance offers from other brands, and people are happy to try something different for a change. Some here didn’t even bother test riding the Africa Twin before buying, the deal was that good.

I'd never even seen one in the flesh before. Never sat on one, never rode one. But test rode it on YouTube, that was good enough to buy one for me.

I looked around extensively at the viable replacements for my r1200gsa te ie KTM, Triumph, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and even Ducati.


All of the above manufacturers produce bikes that are there but not quite , for example no shaft drive, heavier fuel consumption with a smaller tank and hence less range and so on.

I have no complaints about the dealer I use and haven't had any corrosion issues with any of my GSA's but there were issues on my last one with electronic components in the suspension (eventually the shocks were replaced under extended warranty) but to be honest it was this and this alone that made me even more determined NOT to have another ESA bike.

Where to go from here ................... simple a basic GSA with non of the unneccessary/over complicated and spurious sh*t on it
 
Interesting topic. I’ve had about 10bmmws in the last 18/20years , and I am contemplating a change next time round.
 
Scratching my head over this one. For the year to date the GS is best selling bike over 125cc, though it does have competition from the second best selling bike, the GSA.

If they are deserting it’s only happened in the last month as the GS and the GSA are still no1 and no2 in the 10 best selling big bikes in the UK.
 
More like people deserting biking
As we grow older the bikermate pool is getting smaller as the number of younger riders entering motorcycling isn't increasing
As we age - we won't want bikes weighing a quarter of a ton
We are a dying and diminishing breed
 
I just think there are lots of great bikes out there, as good as, and different to do good all around jobs, where as 5 years ago BMW GS was the only real bike for the job. Though BMW are still selling a lot of bikes.
As for price Rises, well BMW have not put theirs up as much as some others like Ducati.
 
Young people are riding mopeds. I see a lot of young people on them, especially in groups.

Most can't aspire to bigger machines because of age restrictions, insurance premiums and running costs.

It costs a lot of money to run motorcycles with all your protective clothing etc... and it's not as sociable and easy like a car.

Mid-life crisis and born again bikers seem to be fewer recently, maybe new bike costs are so expensive.. £10k plus

Second hand bikes aren't as desirable (image) as compared to the new stuff. So a desirability gap?

Roads are more congested and dangerous with Smartphone distractions, so apparent risk is greater?

My group of friends has been static for a few years... and getting older, no younger members introduced.
 
Yes exactly. People who grew up with sports bikes then moved to upright adventure bikes as they aged are now hitting 60-70 years old and are either downsizing or giving up. Most of these traditional BMW customers are the ones who had the cash to buy outright so there’s only the newer to biking riders having a mid life crisis or the people happy to go chase the PCP dragon. Every Beemer dealer I’ve been to over the last couple of months is overloaded with used bikes. In the last year or so I’ve noticed a lot of pre-reg bikes appearing each time a new plate comes out - something that was unheard of for the brand a few years ago.

I agree.
As an aside I wonder what will happen to classic bike values on the back of diminishing enthusiasm in motorcycling.
