People say Aprilias are unreliable !!!!!!!

Got to say after some of the comments about Caponords not being reliable compared to GS they dont have the rear wheels breaking off (shaft failure), complete engine failure, brake failure etc. They do have known probs that are all simply fixed and then thats it. Many BMW seem to have unpredictable catastrophic faults such as above and its not just the GS's the Lts clutch slave cylinder fails and that destroys the clutch and the rear hub bearings fail.

What is happening to BMW ?

I ran an Aprilia RST1000 Futura for two years and about 8000 Miles. Nothing went wrong. Nothing rusted or corroded and the paintwork was excellent. It was the best Sport Tourer I have owned. We did the Scottish Highlands, The Black Forest and France two up with loads of luggage in the excellent Aprilia Panniers and Hepco Becker Top Box. As much as I like my GS I still wonder why I sold my Futura.

I think that`s a bit harsh to be honest. If you were to study all the faults with all bike manufacturers, all would have issues and I don`t suppose BuMW are any better or worse than the rest.

You only hear of the worst bits.

Well yes but they do not cost as much and they do not seem to fail so catastrophically !

only hear the worst bits !!!!!!!!!! not correct I have been ridding BMW and other makes for many years so I have a good user knowledge of them too many people look at the badge and the cost and not at the facts. A lot of people have problems admitting the facts when they have spent so much money and also many owners cover very few miles or ever go anywhere out of 1 hr recovery wait

i myself ran an rst for two years n 20k , an amazing st bike. i only sold due to bad parts backup/dealer, mechanically i only had 2 probs reg/rec plug melted (common to brand) and fuel coupler (like bimmer one) an awsome bike that was ahead of its time.

Fair weather riders are uneffected, which none of these blokes were........ Next?

The last event I did I passed the only 550 Aprilia at the same place on the special test......... good job I was on an 8 year old DRZ400 or the lad would of been real embarressed..... it wasn't me crying at the finish line...... 4Q.

During our previously mentioned trip to the Highlands we rode onto Skye in the middle of the worst Storm they had experienced for years. (Power Cuts all over the Island). By the time we arrived at our Digs at Portree we where well and truely soaked. The next three days there was heavy rain every time we ventured out. The Futura never missed a beat !!. As Hman says this Bike was ahead of it,s time, sold well in Europe but the rather "futuristic" styling which did not find favour with the Biking Press killed it off the the UK.

Absolute BOLLOX!!

One thing you did get right .... "highly trained" ...... that does not mean "good".

You can "highly train" a rottweiler, but that doesn't mean he'll be "good" ... it'll still rip your arm off!

Back on topic: I've had more faults with my £14K GT1200 in 14 months and 23,000 miles than in 6 years with 3 Hondas (VFR800, Varadero 1000 and Pan 1300) and 95,000 miles. But as most are now built with parts from China what do you expect.

yes pans did but not any more If you want to talk about spitting off just look at the video posted on this site called broken arrow of you tube !!!! and most BMW have that shaft drive so they are all capable of doing this where as only one model of the honda did this.

most of the comments here confirm that yes all bikes have problems but when we pay extra for BMW what are we getting thats so much better ?

and to the 550 well thats not realy exhaustive investigated proof ? for a start you were on a Jap bike ? remember for many years did not aprilia build bikes for BMW ?!!?!?!?!?

Ive had 4 rotax engined aprillas, my favourites being the falco, and the futura... i got offered to buy back my old futura as it was the most sorted bike i have ever owned, did 20000 miles on it in 8 months and it was amazing. Very reliable once sorted, again with the melted reg/rec wiring but this was sorted without any serious hassle, and a fuel pump relay went... woo big deal.. thats nothing. Mine lived out on the street in all weathers and was never a problem. I would recommend them to anyone and if i ever get the chance will deffo. buy another one.

Ive had 4 rotax engined aprillas, my favourites being the falco, and the futura... i got offered to buy back my old futura as it was the most sorted bike i have ever owned, did 20000 miles on it in 8 months and it was amazing. Very reliable once sorted, again with the melted reg/rec wiring but this was sorted without any serious hassle, and a fuel pump relay went... woo big deal.. thats nothing. Mine lived out on the street in all weathers and was never a problem. I would recommend them to anyone and if i ever get the chance will deffo. buy another one.

I think alot of the problems with the dealers were that they didnt look around for pattern parts like mine used too. Planet bikes in leicester always sorted me out within a few days tops, sometimes even the same day!

If you own an aprilia its a good idea to know.. whatsisface over in tamworth. Used to work for the aprilia as one of their senior mechanics. Still has all the computer stuff for setting them up. (completely forgetton all names!) If you go on the aprilia forum he is on there. Sound bloke.

Me to, I only sold mine as the Missus wanted us to get another K1200LT which we did. The guy who bought my Futura accepted my "over the phone description" and travelled up from South Wales on the Train. I whipped the Dust Sheets off the Bike in my Garage. "I,ll take it" he said, stumped up the Cash and rode off. Got a phone call next day to say it was the best ride he,s had. There again it was mint, in the best colours of Black and Silver. !! If I could find another New One I just might be tempted.

Bolllocks....I own 2 Aprilias and I,ve rode the capo more in the wet than dry, esp one day in torrential rain 400+mile for 10 hours in France...
