Pepping up an evo

Cam arrived today. Came with a clear set of install instructions. Nice to know the Evo's up to 1990 were very high build quality, after that it all turned to poo :D

Just need to get the Evo bench marked on the dyno before I start swapping things about.

Interestingly the document mentions the ignition module. It says to use either the Screaming Eagle ignition module or an Evo Sporter unit. Both raise the RPM limiter from 5200 to 6000

A nice bit of kit and cheap as chips - £46 + £33 postage and import duties.

Kewell :cool: it will be interesting to see the results :thumb2

Upto 1990 the instructions say "Just swap the cam out and check for clearance on the lobe" after 1989 you have 7 different colour code combinations and a million combinations of cam and pinion gears. If you get it wrong the engine wears out rapidly - good luck with fitting a cam correctly in one of those :D

I seriously doubt I've ever revved my RK over 5k RPM.

Well the flhs Phil. Same thing really.

I want more straight line umph so I can fit the us gearing to give a lower revving engine. Apparently they were geared differently in the uk and Australia to get through noise regs, the Aussie bikes rev even more because they have an even larger rear sprocket QUOTE]

Fitted a 2 over front sprocket to my RK as first step in changing the gearing, followed that with a Baker DD6 gearbox, at motorway speeds engine runs at less than 3.5k (what with the other work, certainly not cheap:blast)

Dyno Day!

Took the Harley to Hilltop motorcycles today for a Dyno run. Gave Geoff a laugh until he had to man handle it up the Dyno ramp :D

Not the best shot in the world but you get the idea. Loads of noise, burning carbon out the exhaust and spinning rollers

The end result wasn't too bad. I altered the jetting a few months ago and it looks like it paid off. Main jet is spot on. it's a little rich on the needle so needs dropping slightly to bring it in line. The rich reading at 1700 rpm is the accelerator pump. There's a few misfires up the rev range as well (those little spike above 4k and higher). There's a damaged wire on the ignition pickup that needs replacing I'm confident this is causing the issue.

Final result was 55 BHP at the back wheel. Nice steady power curve so were good to go for fitting the cam, swapping the pipes and fitting an ignition module - although my ignition module obviously doesn't have a 5200 rev limiter; I'll look into this :)

They are still sat in my garage waiting......in fact, safely stashed in the rafters.....:-)

Fishtails collected from Pete this morning. Fitted this afternoon and taken for a decent run. Just the job and exactly the sound level I was looking for.

Thanks Pete and nice to meet you :beerjug:

Nice to meet you too Rob. Glad the 'tails are producing the right sound. Hope they assist in freeing up a few extra ponies too......for your 'racing Road King'!!

Cheers

I sold mine but we still have the wifes fxr, in order, Airfilter (carb if you want), exhaust, and if you can afford it single fire ignition (crane Hi4) and obviously twin tower coils if you have the ingnition.
Makes a hell of a difference without having to dive into the engine.
She had a thunderheader exhaust but now has short shots to be honest the thunderheader was a far better exhaust, but didnt fit with the forward controls.
We also changed the brakes a few years ago and fitted Pretech 6 piston calipers, cheaper than Billit 6 and uses one piece pads (same as EXUP) fantastic, twin 6 piston calipers the thing stops in a heartbeat.
Also have a new carb now as the old one caught fire and we have a lovley Mikuni HSR 42 bought for us by the nice insurance company as it was cheaper than a new Harley one (go figure)

Any more news on this Rob? How did it all go, or are you pinned in the corner of the garage by some raging beast of a Road King?

The cam is still in its box shep. Just waiting for the weather to improve before I put the bike up for sale.

Once those head bolts are loosened off you must always remove the barrels and change the base gaskets - my 1340 Evo Glide has 83,000 miles on the clock and no leaks!

Just had a happy few minutes stroking the 124 CI S&S unit on the Zodiac stand.... Umm......
