I’m looking at doing a bit of fishing for perch and thought I’d seek guidance on what to buy etc.

Looking to lure or spin for them not drown worms.

I’ve not fished for many years and things have moved on a lot in that time.

So, all help appreciated.

Watch some videos on YouTube. There are loads of guys giving instruction on how to lure fish.
I'd considered taking that up with my boys as you only need a little bit of gear.
I used to carp fish but gave that up 29 years ago, when my first born came along.
Sold all my gear for £1500. Boy did I spend on that pastime.

The little bit of gear and the fact that you can keep moving are what attracts me, I spent hours in the past sat watching a float or swing tip.

I’m hoping to fly fish too as I inherited all my old man's gear when he passed.

Spikey buggers they are!
Don’t try to grab them from behind. I always used to run my hand backwards from the head so the spines are “ flattened “.
Double red maggot or a big juicy lob worm did the trick. Size 16 barbless on a pre tied hook length.
I could never get the hang of tying hooks on! :blast Cheating probably but it worked for me.

Oh, sorry, just re read what you wrote. Never tried lures for perch.

Some replies here from the hard of reading.
He wants to do lure fishing!

No not hard of reading , just offering advice, if he'd going to put a spinner on, be prepared for pike too

And there a different kettle of fish , without forceps & gloves ;)

Depending on where you fish, snags will be a problem. Try casting and retrieving on a pond/ lake where you know there are no snags and suss out the drop rate. If you’re fishing in really snaggy waters then consider nipping off the double or treble hook and tying a VERY short length of line (1/2 inch) behind the lure to connect the hooks which is a smaller breaking strain to the main line or better still weaker than a short length of leader. If you do then hook a sunken branch the hook will snap off and your expensive lure is saved.

Edit- you can also try groundbaiting near some reeds etc., so you attract the small fish perch feed on. Little and often.

Caught most of my fish by fishing snags.
12lb bekley big game line and size 2 drennan super specialist hooks dragged them out.

As above, maggots are hard to beat, but have also caught them on cooked prawns & woodlice!. Best chance I've found tho, once you know there are big ones about, a small, fresh dead Roach under a float gets the bigger one's

First fish I ever caught! 65 ish years ago....maggot was its downfall in Arlesey lake.
The late great Dick Walker...from Hitchin.. always said a record perch would come out of there.
Filled the lake in now!

I did a lot of fishing in my childhood and it was always perch or roach, plus the occasional eel if it was nighttime. It takes me back

umm, I go spinning for erm Trout this time year- ish and yes silvery by-catch is a very smalll possibility on my river, but so are perch. Small Mepps do well for perch. Fished fast out of of a deep pool into faster water. I catch more Perch and chub than trout, and honest guv, no silver ones.

It’s a small river so never big, but nice to catch. They give up the fight pretty quick though.

Oops - missed that bit! Only caught small Perch spinning, this guy seems to have success in catching alot of big Perch spinning/lure fishing
