Heading off 25 September 2 up on the Goldwing to visit rellies in S Portugal.

Am starting to research attractive routes from Perpignan to Lagos spending 4-5 days en route (am ok for the trip to Perpignan, which is viathe ferry to Caen and then Bourges (visiting friends en route).

I have crossed Spain and Portugal a good few times on a moto but as I break out the trusty Michelin and start my research, welcome any pointers from the inmates of UKGSer for good roads between E Pyrenees and S Portugal. (Of course I shall be diving into the wealth of info on this site too).

Thanks in advance🙏🙏

If you simply follow the coast about 50 miles inland you can be on good mountain roads for virtually the whole distance.

Currently thinking (after 5 minutes looking at the Michelin) of this itinerary:

Perpignan (actually Ceret where my sister lives)
Lleida (Lérida in old money)
Zaragoza (love that city!)
Avila
Plasencia
Cáceres
Mérida
Huelva
Lagos

But I am very open to (and grateful for) suggestions from the tosserati

I'd go with the 50 miles inlands bit...across the Spanish Pyrenees...across Northern Spain before hitting Portugal at or around Braganca, then heading South down the 'spine' of Portugal.

Thanks. And the reason for that? (Versus diagonally across Spain)

For me...mainly as it would be a bit cooler...and with more interesting roads available. Some great roads across the Southern side of the Pyrenees, likewise all across the North of Spain and I've ridden a bit around Braganca...both the Pt side and Esp side...superb quiet backroads.

Between Zaragoza and Avila you should, may I suggest, visit the town of Segovia Simon? It has a 1st century AD aquaduct which is still in use and a fine looking castle the Alcázar de Segovia. It it many many years since I have been but I think you would find it a very interesting place to see.

Thanks Aidan we actually stayed there on our last motorcycle trip to the Peninsula and very much enjoyed it

Avila
Plasencia
Cáceres
Mérida

the road from Avila to Plascencia is okay but not as good as the N502 over the Sierra de Gredos. It goes all the way south to Cordoba but maybe hook a right at some point.

Avila is lovely within the city walls. I stayed in the Parador which was very good.

Your Zaragoza Avila route will keep you almost entirely on the Meseta, or tableland, which will be entirely boring as far as riding is concerned. It'll also be hard ti avoid heavy traffic between Barcelona and Madrid even tho' you're not going to either.

The northern route is by far the best, loads if choice and some great roads.

So I am now in Cordoba heading back to Blighty…and seeing a fair amount of rain both here and ahead of me as I cross France (to Calais).

Any route or timing suggestions from the Tosserati🙏¿
