I went to have a set of Metzeler Unicross tyres fitted at Watling Tyres but when I got there they refused to fit them. They told me they didn't fit tubed tyres onto tubeless rims as it could kill me and they'd be responsible :spitfire:spitfire

I'd planned on going off-road this weekend so I then asked them to remove the tyres for me so I could fit the new ones at home. They had no problem removing the tyres off my rims and they were then perfectly happy for me to go and kill myself by me fitting them myself :eek

Anyway, knowing I wouldn't kill myself using tubed tyres, I got home, fitted the front one fine and then did the back one. It was a right bugger getting the last bit of tyre onto the rim so I got a 4' tyre lever out and with the assistance of a mate I really put my back into it, trying to get that last bit of tyre on. All of sudden there was a loud crack. I had snapped the tyre bead. A brand new tyre too :(

The nonsense of it is, if I hadn't told them it was a tubeless rim, they wouldn't have known it was tubeless and they'd would've fitted the tyre without a problem. As far as I'm aware there isn't a safety issue when using tubes in a tubeless rim. I asked for an explanation why they wouldn't do it and the only answer they could come up with was " we just don't do it". I've always used Watling Tyres in the past but this will be my last visit to them.

I had some theiving scum try and steal the lead off my garage roof two nights ago and when I picked my bike from its service on Thursday, the garage had put a massive scratch in my exhaust. They say bad luck comes in three's so I hope I'm now done. I'm staying in bed all day today just in case...

P.S:- what happens if I use the tyre with a broken bead? Will it come off or stay on? Anyone have any experience of using a tyre with a broken bead?

yes, dont do it

at the ryedale rally I had to change a tyre for a new one for more Grip half way tru the second day , as i was hurrying I enlisted some hell from my mates , but as we were squeezing the last bit of the tyre on the Rim ( With michelin Mooses 18' rear Rim ) the Bead snapped , I was just about to be cought on time so I rode off hoping i would get away with it , but alas after 25 miles the tyre came off the Rim .

Bad luck , but learn from my mastakes

cheers Phil - that's exactly what I needed to know :beerjug:

I was hopeful I could still use the tyre but it was so easy to slip onto the rim after the bead broke, I kinda suspected it wouldn't last too long. Arse

I would be inclined to try and get my money back on the tyre though .

Dont ask dont get !

Unfortunately I purchased it mail order from Germany, a few months ago.

I'm seriously thinking of getting an 18" wheel... the 17" is not really normal for off-road purposes and its impossible to get mousse ( let alone a proper off road enduro tyre ). I've sold my XR and the HP2 is going to be my main off-road bike for the foreseeable future so probably money well spent.

18" Back wheel

your problem is going to be cost , look for a 17" wire wheel from a Gs 1200 and us that as a donor for the rear HUB , now getting a rim that will fit is a problem, no one in the UK could come up with one or a rim to suit. The problem is

the rear wheel on the BM's is tubeless, so the spokes are aligned to go to the outside of the RIM and are 40 Hole ( 40 Spokes ) the most common used racing rim is "Excel" and as standard are made in 36 hole and aligned to the centre of the rim

I bought my rims and spokes from Woodies Wheel works , with the biggest Spoke Dia available http://photos.woodyswheelworks.com/displayimage.php?album=6&pos=47

there are also wheels available from Touratech, HPN but the price might help you make up your mind ,

I think the German Company "Baer" no sure of the Spelling who make the standard wheels , might now have a Rim and spokes for the standard rim

Watling Tyres in Catford

I've used them loads of times. I think they offer good service and good prices :nenau

My friend's just returned from Watling tyres with my rim and guess what? They fitted both the tube and the tyre this time! I only sent him there to test them, see if they knew what they were talking about. They obviously don't.
