Hope someone can help. Had to remove the tank cover last week and since rebolting the cap and surround I get a slight amount of petrol fumes. Anybody now if there are some significant things to look out for/line up etc?

Hi

That happened to me once (55 vanilla GS). I took it back apart and re-assembled it and the problem went away without me doing anything obviously different.

There is nothing specific to line up as I recall (except the bolt holes), but you need to make sure the rubber gasket is in the right place - it's not a tight fit around the filler so it can slop around a bit.

Mine wa put on so badly the first time I assembled it I had petrol spill out under braking - I guess the rubber gasket was somewhat off-cock but it loked fine from the outside.

Took mine apart the othetr week again for something else and had no probs.

Fuel

I found that the position of the rubber spacers around the tank cove and the cap must be put back in the right position. I put them upside down and had similar. Look at where they have left marks on the cover and that should determine their correct position.
Hope this helps

cheers for that.

I looked at it earlier and decided that the cap wasn't quite central so I loosened all of the tank cover bolts and used the fuel cap as the starting position - certainly looks better. Test ride later!

Swollen Ring??

Sounds painful right?

Don't know if the 1200 filler is the same as earlier models but the O ring that sits underneath the filler swells up with the petrol fumes, did you use a new O ring to reassemble?

If not you probably need to leave it somewhere warm overnight so that the petrol can evaporate and allow it to shrink to its original size, that should ensure a good seal.

Hope it helps.

final stage- it was indeed a swollen ring - bought a new one - job done. Many thanks to beak freak. Didn't have time to let the oriiginal dry out and shrink but a new on at £5 didn't break the bank:beerjug:
