Am I in any danger of my motorcycle exploding, I am hoping someone of this Parish can help

I've recently noticed a smell of petrol emanating from my 1200 (2005 model), my wife noticed it earlier in the week after a refreshing ride-out to the dales. It became somewhat more pronounced later in the day and after a couple of days my wife commented she was rather worried. I have not spilt any petrol on recent fill ups and my current petrol level indicator is at 1/4 full.It is rather worrying.

The petrol I used was not of a supermarket brand and therefore is of a superior marque.

My motorcycle has no ESA, ABS, comfort pack or other such baubles.

Potentially Dangerous..!

I recently did a deep clean & think I got a bit too deep with a rag around the fuel lines on the tank area, I must have caught the push on connector which loosened the pipe off VERY easily, first thing I noticed was the smell, I was lucky the pipe didn't come completely off, they push back on ok & very secure, but so so easy to disturb & potentially very dangerous.
I suggest a good look around before using..

Good luck..

Hiya,
Me too..................same as Miff. Stupid I know but done it two or three times now.

Have a sniff around the fuel filler as the cap can close a few millimetres "up" and pushing it down engages it against the seal.

The next place (as already suggested) take off the left hand (looking at the bike from the front) silver panel (the one with the BMW logo) off and you should see the 3 fuel pipes. One is a high pressure fitting that clips on but the other 2 (breathers?) just push onto the fitting.

Dyslexics !

2 dyslexics driving in a car when one says,"can you smell petrol"? and the other says " I cant even smell my own name"

The fuel couplings are not the most durable ever made (mine started leaking after last winter's lay up for no apparent reason)
Had a strong smell of petrol when garaged overnight.
Replaced it with a metal one from here http://www.tom-parker.co.uk/index.php?v=1&recall=true&

Hi - can you be more specific about what Tom Parker product you bought? I've got exactly the same problem with my GSA - strong petrol smell each morning, nothing to do with the filler - all coming from under that left hand (from the front) panel. I thought it was to do with the big round fuel sender thingies (:nenau), but if there's flimsy couplings in there, that sounds more likely. I'd be grateful for any part numbers that sorted it out for good.

Cheers:beerjug:
