Petrol Stations, French Supermarkets.

i thought it was because french card machines were not using the same standards as everyone else in europe. hence why uk cards worked in machines everywhere other than france.

now the french have updated their kit, it all works :nenau

You could be right... either way, the problem seems, by and large, to have gone away and in recent years, certainly over the last 5 years (maybe longer) I've not experienced any problems with the acceptance of VISA debit.

To précis the above (and the separate thread about shiny stickers on your helmets)... There is NO great problem.

So, relax, enjoy your holiday and (only if really necessary) then, when it's over, start to worry about what all the fuss was about.

Just back from a 1300 mile trip down to the Limoges area and had a fantastic time , BUT got caught out by a Hyper U supermarket 24/24 card only pump in Dreux on a sunday morning , fuel light had been for 10 miles , we must have tried 6 cards of various flavours and it refused the lot , car in front and behind had no probs , luckily my poor french got me told there was a total garage 3 miles away on "route de Paris" that took cards and was open in the kiosk

In our experience if you wave a euro note at a fellow customer, whether it be a bike or car they are normally obliging and fill you up on their card.
